Amazing Puff Balls

"These are wonderful! My cousin brought them as an appetizer for Thanksgiving dinner one year, and I got the recipe. I make them for work parties, and even quick snacks at home. You can always make more or less by using more or less cream cheese and crescent rolls! Trust me, these are excellent!"

  • 1 (8 ounce) package hormel sliced pepperoni (or any brand)
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
  • 2 (10 1/8 ounce) packages Pillsbury Refrigerated Crescent Dinner Rolls

directions

  • Take out the crescent rolls, and seperate into the individual triangles.
  • Flatten each triangle and slice it so that it becomes three small triangles.
  • Dice or chop your pepperoni into tiny, tiny pieces.
  • Mix the pepperoni into the cream cheese, stir very well so all of the pepperoni pieces are mixed into the cream cheese.
  • Take a little spoonful of your cream cheese/pepperoni mixture and put it in the middle of one of your crescent rolls triangles.
  • Pinch up all of the sides around the filling.
  • Repeat and place them all on a cookie sheet.
  • Bake for the amount of time stated on the crescent rolls (usually 11 minutes at 350°F).
  • Let cool for a few minutes before serving!

  1. Can you prepare these ahead of time and then cook them a day later?
     
  2. Is it just me or does it seem that these pictures aren’t what is described in the recipe? There’s no mention of putting a piece of cheese on the filling before you roll them up and those aren’t cut into triangles, those are rectangles. I was hoping to see a picture of how you roll them up.
     
  3. Do you freeze these before or after baking? How does freezing affect baking temp and time?

  1. These are cute & yummy. Since I made my own crescent dough, I faced some challenges. I put the dough in the fridge overnight, and the next day, rolled it thin while cold. I wrestled with making various kinds of pockets, but ended up cutting with a 3" biscuit cutter and pushing into mini-muffin cups, and filling. They came out nicely (pic). In the future, I would change up the filling, too and maybe do one with ham, spring onions and gruyere mixed in the cream cheese, etc. Very nice!
     
  2. Addictively yummy little buggers!! I needed to bake these at 375 to get them crispy enough, but that's probably my oven's fault. One of the great things about this recipe is that it inspires all kinds of creativity--bacon/ham/sausage instead of pepperoni, adding green onions/olives/hot peppers/fresh herbs, topping with seeds, etc., etc. I can't wait to make them again--at the last party a full platter was emptied in 10 minutes flat!   3. Since I usually have 2 out of the 3 ingredients I desided to try these out. I didn't have the pepperoni on hand...it's not my favorite thing...so I used what I had...a small jar of dried beef. I put it in my mini chopper and and shredded it very fine. The puff balls came out wonderful with the exception the filling was slightly salty...my fault I didn't rinse the dried beef before I chopped it. Actually would have been fine if I had doubled the recipe. Then I made them again and used a small can of imitation crab, a teaspoon of chopped garlic, 3green onions and a dash of worchestershire. Both times these little bites of joy disappeared almost as fast as they came out of the oven. They are on my Super Bowl refreshment list...maybe a triple batch. I am also thinking maybe a sweet puff ball...cream cheese and crushed pineapple that has been drained really well. Danzy
     
  4. These were amazing and so easy. I put the pepperoni in the food processor and added some garlic and Italian seasoning. I also made a batch of shredded chicken and ranch seasonings. Both were amazing! You could add a little sugar and cinnamon to some cream cheese and a little apple pie filling. You could even add some jam to the cream cheese. The ideas are limitless! This will be a go to from now on! Thank you!
     
  5. I must revise my previous review: I cannot tell you how good these really are! I have made them probably eight times since I found this recipe in October. No matter what party of event Im going to everyone loves them. My mini chopper does a great job of chopping the pepperoni and preventing carpel tunnel! I've been adding some Italian seasoning and a little garlic powder to them. I also use a block and half of cream cheese, and like an 8 oz package of pepperoni, because I like a lot of filling. The way mine get folded, the filling is not completely covered but they usually don't leak and if they do its no big deal. These are the best thing since sausage balls! THANK YOU!!

  1. Very good & super easy to make! I used a mixture of 3 different spicy Italian sausages instead of the pepperoni. I also added in some fresh grated parmesan cheese & green onion. Next time I'm going to make them with a chunk of brie cheese & jalapeno pepper jelly in them to make them vegetarian.
     
  2. YUM. No wonder all the great reviews. I tried some w/some ground beef instead of pepperoni (my niece doesn't like pepperoni and I had a small bit of cooked ground beef). Just added garlic powder and a little season salt. Very good. SOme liked the ground beef better. I thought the pepperoni ones were delish, esp. when warm still.
     
  3. AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME! I work at pizza hut so we had the pepperoni available, i used a pizza crust instead of the crescents, and added some chicken and Jalapeno... EVERYONE was raving about them. We were a little skeptical but im up to try just about anything. I'll be making these for an appetizer for several christmas parties coming up! EXTREMELY VERSITILE filling options, I cant wait to shake it up a bit, but I think pepperoni and jalapeno taste awesome in this!!!!
     
  4. The first time I made this I followed the recipe exactly, and they were just okay. This morning I wanted something quick and easy for brunch, so I tried a half batch of this with Canadian bacon instead of pepperoni. I also added 1/4 tsp each Italian seasoning and garlic. To make it super easy I just rolled the filling up in the cresent rolls. Turned out great; didn't even need a dipping sauce this time. Thanks for sharing.
     
  5. There's great potential in this recipe, but I wasn't much of a fan of it "as-is" - the pepperoni taste seemed to overpower everything else. It might be good with garlic and Italian seasoning added as another reviewer suggested. I also see lots of possibilities for variations - taco seasoning in the cream cheese and peppers instead of pepperoni, garlic and basil with broccoli and carrots...mmm...
