All-American Sloppy Joes (Vegetarian)

I've been searching for a vegetarian sloppy joe recipe I really like, and I finally found it. This one is total comfort food! They remind me a lot of my great aunt's sloppy joes. If you've never cooked with TVP before, give it a try! I started using it recently, and it tastes amazingly like meat! It really takes on the flavor of whatever you cook it with.   1. Heat the oil in a medium saucepan, and saute the onions and celery until very tender.
  2. Add all remaining ingredients except the buns and simmer, covered, for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Serve mixture on buns or rolls.

We were halfway through dinner before I told my family it was meatless. My husband had figured I was using ground turkey instead of beef because of the diference in color. We will definitely be eating this again, especially when I forget to thaw out meat for dinner....

This recipe is a wonderful meatless version of the old classic. I think that TVP is a WONDERFUL substitute for ground meat in dishes such as this. AND the dried TVP is a much less expensive than the packages of "soy crumbles" found in the freezer sections. The only changes I made were for my own personal taste. I added a bit of cayenne pepper and some hot sauce, just to add a bit of heat. The sugar and molasses give the sloppy joe sauce a nice, sweet base. For me, I like a little fire too : > I really liked the celery, it gave a nice crunch. Some green peppers might be nice as well. I made the whole recipe, and froze half for dinner another time!
