  1. Just finished making this dressing and the taste is so similar to Kraft's catalina dressing! Thanks, I will enjoy this often!

  2. This was so good. I used a little less sugar. After I made it we have had salads quite often because the kids and I love this dressing so much. I think it is important to use the blender as it makes the emulsion. I don't think I will ever use the store bought stuff again. edited June 2012. This has been my go to recipe for a long time now, I don't grate the onion anymore and add some smoked paprika in addition to changing what type of vinegar-all are good.

  3. I've been making this recipe since 2004. I've tried different kinds of vinegar and found that Balsamic tastes the best. I've also used Splenda in place of the sugar and Canola oil in place of vegetable oil. Everyone that's tasted this dressing, has asked for the recipe.<br/>Thanks so much for sharing t.

  4. I made this exactly as directed. Not my favorite, although I usually love ketchup based salad dressings. I think it was too sweet. I may try to make again with much less sugar. Just realized that I did use the heinz organic ketchup and I think it is sweeter than the regular kind. I put in about 2 T. of grated onion, next time I would use less.

  5. Wonderful recipe! I pour it over breaded chicken and bake it. To the submitter who uses canola oil: it saddens me to read that some folks still use canola oil. It is so unhealthy, but because of persuasive advertising, folks believe it to be healthy. It is genetically modified. Please, please, swith to grapeseed oil. Coconut oil is also very healthy. Thank you for the great salad dressing!

  1. This went excellent with the vegan taco salad I took to my company potluck - thanks! I subbed agave for the honey.

  3. This is a great recipe. I substituted 1 tsp onion powder for the grated onion. I used Bragg's unfiltered apple cider vinegar, Whey-Low (an all natural sugar replacement) and the ketchup I used was already sweetened with Agave Nectar. So no refined sugar went into my dressing. Tasted fantastic!

  4. I made this up for my husband, as he likes the store-bought dressing. I also added a dash of Worchestershire sauce. I used onion powder instead of grated onions and regular mustard as opposed to dry mustard (my preference). I would also suggest using a little less sugar, but the recipe seemed close enough to the original. Thanks for the recipe!

  5. Awesome recipe. Being allergic to soy, I have to make my own salad dressings...I forgot just how good Catalina is! I put 1/8 cup honey and subbed the rest of the sugar as Splenda granular...worked great. I used part balsamic aged vinegar and the balance as a rice wine vinegar...this was great...also didn't want to mess with grated onions, so I used about 1/4 tsp of onion powder instead. Chose canola oil instead of vegetable for obvious reasons (allergy). Like another reviewer I didn't use a blender, in fact I was even more lazy and just put all ingredients into a mason jar, put lid on and shook well. Will make this again...excellent!
