It is called ugli fruit because it is ugly, with odd shapes and pot-marked skin, ranging in size from that of a baseball to giant grapefruit. Its Jamaican origins are unclear, but it is believed to be a cross between a mandarin orange and a Pomelo (the original grapefruit). The ugli fruit's skin is very thick, loosely covering large, juicy, acid-sweet, yellow-orange pulp segments (seed-free).
