Steel cut oats are not flat or flaked, but look like grain. The taste is also completely different–sort of nutty, like wheat berries. They are touted as a purer choice than oatmeal. This recipe is from the Food Network. However, If you want steel cut oats plain and in a hurry: before you got to bed, put a half cup of steel cut oats in pan and cover with water. The next morning, drain the water, add milk (or cook in water) and bring to a gentle boil. Takes about 5 minutes to cook.
