    The 2005 RecipeZaar World Tour has me in search of new recipes from regions around the world. This is an untried recipe from Cooking Light. I love the flavor that fennel introduces to any dish, including this elegant borscht. If you try it ahead of me, please let me know what you think.

    This salad stands well as its own summertime vegetarian entree or as a side to a simply grilled meat. Chicken and lamb work particularly with these Mediterranean flavors. If watercress is not available, you can use another peppery green such as arugula. Red lentils are best in this recipe as they cook faster and offer a nice visual contrast to the greens.

    Posted in response to a request. This untried recipe is from Gundel's Hungarian Cooking. First published in 1934, this is a compilation of the best recipes of Gundel's, a then famous restaurant, and it's chef Gundel Karoly. The English translation is somewhat broken so I've tried to make it a bit clearer. I am posting the ingredients as they are listed, lard and all. Feel free to adapt as you see fit.

    This is a modification of a recipe from a nifty cookbook my boss gave me for my birthday. (I guess everyone I know has figured out, when in doubt a good cookbook makes the perfect gift.) The original recipe was conceived by Jeffrey Murphy of GB Ratto & Co. My modifications make this dish a little lighter while preserving the terrific flavors of the original. Because this salad is vegan, it travels very well and would make a nice addition at a picnic or potluck.

    After buying barley malt for one dish, started looking for others that would use this somewhat unusual ingredient. If you don't have barley malt, you could substitute rice syrup, but you will loose a bit of flavor. The original recipes comes from www.wholefoodsmarket.com, but this submission includes my tweaks.

    While visiting Los Angeles, I found this recipe on a card that you can pick up at the local grocers. This particular combination of meat and fruit had me intrigued so I brought it back for use at some later point. Filet mignon is pricey so this is certainly a special occasion food. Planning to serve it with roasted potatoes and maybe some nice asparagus.

    I found this recipe while searching for new dishes to introduce for the Zaar World Tour of 2005. With the holidays coming up, I've decided to post it though it is as of yet untried. Use the shredding attachment on the food processor to quickly shred the apples. You can also grind or chop them. Don't refrigerate more than two hours before serving or the haroset will be too watery.

    Trying to use up the last of a pork loin purchased on sale I began consulting the my new cookbook of healthy dishes with a Latin flair (WW Simply Bueno - which is wonderful). There were several stews that appealed to me but I couldn't decide and eventually came up with my own. This stew combines ingredients from various regions from the chilies of the southwest, plantains typical of the Caribbean, to the use of squash found in South America. Authentic, maybe not.     Came across this one in my current quest to change up the menu a bit and have fallen for fennel. With a distinctive licorice flavor, fennel has many natural pairings including both pork and tomatoes. In this recipe, grilled or pan cooked chops are given a zippy finish with a Italian inspired sauce. For those of us who don't always have time to marinade and do a lot of prep work, this seems like lovely dish to serve to family or friends.

    In Lebanon, this soup is called Adas B'Sbaanegh and is prepared as a starter course or mezze. Though I have not yet tried it, the recipe looks quite straight forward with pleasing results. Traditionally, this is prepared with water but you should feel free to use broth. The amount of oil depends on your taste and dietary preferences. Originally found in a very old cookbook produced by Sahadi's a fantastic market in Brooklyn, NY.

    In the midst of a heat wave in the northeast USA and all I can think of is salads and grilling. Found this one while scouring a cookbook and decided to post it for others to enjoy. Though the directions are presented for an indoor grill, you can easily do this with the conventional variety. This is the recipe with my planned modifications. If you try it before I do, comments and suggestions would be helpful. Cooking time does not include 60 minutes of chilling.

    This comforting dessert from Burma is being posted untried for ZWT II. The resulting pudding is much thicker than what Americans associate with pudding and is cut into bars and served in slices. The idea of using semolina in a dessert intrigues me so I look forward to trying it myself soon.
