    Jane Grossman Stern and Michael Stern are American writers who specialize in books about travel, food, and popular culture. They are best known for their "Roadfood" books, website, and magazine columns, in which they seek out restaurants serving American regional specialties. (Sort of a precursor to "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives".) This recipe was published over 25 years ago, and I used to alternate this with my Recipe #294487 to use my turkey carcass. I have also used orzo in this soup with great success. For either of my soups, I usually begin to make the stock or broth right after all my guests have left. I refrigerate it overnight, and make the soup the next day. You do need a meaty carcass to start with, which I couldn't indicate in the ingredient list.

You can make this soup on the stovetop or in the slow cooker.I brought this soup to a boil on the stove and then put it in the slow cooker and let it simmer on low for 2-3 hours. If you like black bean soup, you're gonna love this!

    Canned variety is so sweet and good when you might be "not so feelin' good", but this will make you feel a whole lot better anyday. I never thought I would revert myself out of canned tomato soup until one day I had all of these fresh tomatoes in the kitchen from stopping at the road-side stands in the hot summer. Fresh tomatoes in summer are the best for this in the summer. Canned tomatoes based on variety and region will have a factor on your results too. In the cold, blistery days here in WNY I need a good warm pick me up with a good and cheesy grilled sandwich. This recipe will use canned tomatoes since they are easier to purchase.
