Recipes to Try- Pasta, Rice, Soups, Salads

My "Recipes to Try" Cookbook was getting out of control with all of the amazing recipes I have been saving. I thought it would help to categorize them so I can find them easier when I have time to try something new.

A football weekend/cold weather family favorite.

    Recipe #26001

I found this great recipe on the back of my box of Quaker Quick Barley. It goes together quickly and has a wonderful taste. It's healthy too!

    Recipe #189087

Italian flavors blend in a creamy, satisfying soup that has potatoes, italian sausage, and kale. I like a kick, so I use spicy sausage and add crushed red pepper flakes. The heavy cream really pulls this soup together and makes it restaurant-worthy! Don't forget a fresh, crusty loaf of bread for dipping.

This was an experiment that turned into a pleasant surprise. I started with a recipe from the Zuni Cafe Cookbook and added a few ingredients for taste and color and increased the quantity for my hungry family. It requires some chopping but comes together rather quickly and is very tasty! (Made in the Midwest with Michigan Asparagus:)

    Recipe #222613

I got the original recipe from Cooking Club of America. I changed the amounts due to my personal tastes as you may do. It doesn't HAVE to be refrigerated overnight, the only time I do that is just for my convienience. Amounts on salad ingredients may be adjusted or left out according to what you like. This is a great pasta salad and I'm always asked for the recipe when I take it to a potluck. Try it, you won't be sorry!8 (1 1/2-cup) servings.

Healthier version of the Latin dish.

    Recipe #142582

This may be the best salad on the face of the earth. I can't think of one person that has tried this that hasn't loved it. Enjoy!

    Recipe #283497

Here's another dressing for that great BLT salad (BLT Salad Recipe #164889)from loonytunesfan. Plus another version of BLT Salad from me.

    Recipe #164968

Here's a bowl of chili that you'll loose your mind over, and well worth it! It's easy to make and great for company.

    Recipe #273304

I found this on the TOH site and it has quickly become a favorite of my family's. Add a salad and a warm loaf of sourdough and it's perfect comfort food! I generally make the roux and then throw everything in my crockpot to simmer for a couple of hours. I use a cup of the buffalo sauce and 8 oz of Velvetta and it turns out just right for us.

    Recipe #109295

Just chili. no fancy names, no special ingredients...just chili.

    Recipe #271804

Northwoods Inn or Clearmans serves this dressing over crisp chopped iceberg lettuce. It is out of this world yummy.

    Recipe #271818

Just like granny used to make it!

    Recipe #269201

This is one of our families favorites and it is requested for the family get togethers throughout the year. It is bright, colorful, easy to make and since it uses low fat ingredients guilt free. The recipe was adapted from one served at the Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth Texas.

My German grandmother always served these when she made pot roast when we were growing up. We drooled with anticipation.

    Recipe #109721

I am posting the recipe as written by Paula Deen but I made a few changes. I used shredded taco cheese instead of cubed cheddar cheese. I mixed in a cup of salsa instead of topping each serving. I also used regular tostitos instead of doritos to mix in. The salad is great and very quick to make on a busy night.

With a full pantry, a freezer bag of meatballs, and a handful of pasta, you can make a really filling soup. Of course this soup can also be made with fresh or frozen veggies, canned was just what I had one night when I needed dinner in a hurry. ETA after a few reviews mentioned this: We like our soups very thick, more like stews than soups. If you like more liquid in your soup, you're going to want to add one to three cans of water according to the reviewers, because the pasta will soak almost all of the liquid while it cooks.

    Recipe #223222

Clipped from the Rocky Mountain News during one of my trips to Colorado. Wonder if HE makes this or Mrs. Elway? And does he drink a 6 pack when he eats it?

In 2001 I attempted to duplicate Max & Erma's (well-known mid-west restaurant chain) chicken tortilla soup. It elicits favorable compliments every time that I serve it. Rather than prepare a time-consuming cream/milk base, I chose to use condensed soups. With the addition of the other ingredients, the end result is a tasty, spicy, flavorful southwestern soup.
