    Prize Winners

All of the recipes included here mention winning a prize in the recipe description. I thought it would be fun to assemble a cookbook of "winning" recipes.

Neat-To-Eat Sloppy Joe Crescents (Pillsbury Bake-Off Finalist)

    8 Reviews |  By DuChick

This sloppy sandwich is given a new twist when it's baked into a crescent. You can still lick your fingers, but you won't have to wash as many shirts! This was a finalist recipe in Bake-Off #24.

    Grand Champion Peach Jam
    Handle

I make this jam when freestone peaches are available because the entire jam making process is much easier and quicker when the stone slides out of the fruit when you halve the fruit. Heat a large pot of boiling water and dip your whole peaches in them for a quick peeling method. 8 cups of peaches is around 11 large peaches. Chop the fruit about the size of a pair of dice. This is absoulutely the best peach jam I have ever made.

Spicy Apple Twists (Pillsbury Bake-Off Winner)
    Handle
    2 Reviews |  By DuChick

This was the 1958 Grand Prize Winner in the Pillsbury Bake-Off. Kudos goes to Dorothy DeVault of Ohio who created it. It's described as a miniature pastry-a lighter version of old fashioned apple dumplings. It would look divine served in a single serving glass dessert dish topped with a dollop of whipped cream and a cherry!

This is the 1971 winner of the Pillsbury Bake-Off. It was created by Pearl Hall of Washington. It's described as "delicious as pecan pie" only easier to make and much more portable to eat in bar form.

Chinese Chicken Burgers With Rainbow Sesame Slaw-Contest Winner!
    Handle

This is Brigitte Nguyen's $50,000 Grand Prize recipe in the 2009 National Chicken Cooking Contest put on by the National Chicken Council. Geared to big appetites, it could easily be turned into eight burgers rather than six. Cook them on the grill or in a frying pan if you prefer. As a shortcut, you could substitute 2 cups of already-grated cabbage for the julienned vegetables in the slaw. Look for Sriracha chile sauce on the Asian aisle of the supermarket. Any type of Asian chile sauce may be substituted.

    Garden Harvest Quick Bread

This 2008 Cooking Light Ultimate Reader Recipe Contest winner quickly became one of my baking main-stays. Often I'll double the batch and freeze the extra loaf. I've adapted Jennifer Dunklee's original recipe by adding whole wheat flour, nutmeg and cloves while decreasing cinnamon and maintaining apple skin. You can find the original thanks to internetnut; just search Food.com for "Garden Harvest Cake".

Blue Ribbon Winning Whole Barley Sandwich Bread (With Video!)
    Handle

I worked on this recipe for years- I wanted a good tasting sandwich bread with the nutrition of barley, one that would be very moist and keep well. I must have done it because so many people have told me that this is the best bread that they have ever eaten! And to top that, I won a blue ribbin and best of division award at the fair this year (2010). I admit that it is a little more work with the extra step of cooking the barley, but if you do as I do and do it in 3 steps when you have time- it fits into anyones schedule! Another bonus is that the dough makes killer hamburger buns as well as dinner rolls. My husband loves it when I make individual sized loafs so he can have a whole loaf to himself!!!! (For a video series on how to make this bread, go to you tube, Baking Whole Barley Bread video: http://www.youtube.com/user/Sweetgraces#p/u/0/YLmJFXIA1pQ Thanks!)

A winner from the Eat Your Heart Out Contest and posted on www.GoodHousekeeping.com. We had this tonight and it was really good. We used whole grain tortillas. My husband thought it was a little dry. I thought it was very good but I liked mine a bit more sweet (so I added more raisins). And it was very healthy too! Calories ... 333 Total Fat ... 8g.
