The reason this is called a “cake and custard” pie is that during baking the filling separates into two distinct layers: custard on the bottom and sponge cake on top How come? It’s simply that the egg white, beaten to stiff peaks and folded in at the last minute, separates from the heavier yolk mixture and floats to the top.
Growing up we had this pie every year at Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's simple but decadent. If you've never had Custard Pie before, it's a little bit like Creme Brulee in a pie crust. This is wonderful served chilled with REAL whipped cream. Enjoy.
There are several rhubarb custard pies on Zaar but I didn't find any quite like this one. It came from a friend at work and was tried and approved by another co-worker before I finally tried it last night. I think the topping really finishes it off. NOTE: I substituted Splenda for the sugar in the filling and it absolutely could not be detected. (I would have done the same with the topping but DH made the topping for me while I was making the filling.)
Yummy!! And very classy looking. From Chatelaine magazine. I am a fan of easy yet delectable desserts and this qualifies on both counts. I've stated 3 lemons because it will depend on size and juicyness.
This chocolate pie is not only a Southern traditional dish, but my mom has to make 2 to take to church lunches. Most people go back for dessert only to find all the pie gone - the smart ones get their piece on the first trip through. This is pie is also served as "birthday cake" on most everyone's special day. And the only way to top it off is with a piled-high meringue!
Deeeelish...that's about all I can say. This is easy and if you like banana cream pie, but are tired of the same ole same ole, this pretty layered dessert is sure to wow your dinner guests or your husband.
This is my alteration of a Better Home and Gardens recipe. I use this recipe because it calls for milk instead of evaporated milk, and I made a few small changes like using fresh puree instead of canned, more vanilla and added ginger. Because of the fresh puree it takes longer to bake.
This pie gets a lot of mmmmm's. It is two separate layers and looks beautiful when sliced. I make it every year for the holidays and family won't accept anything else. easy easy easy and comes out perfect every time
My grandma made the most wonderful custard pie. When I got to stay the night or weekend with her, she would always have this for me. Of course I could never ever make this like I remembered until I finally asked her for the recipe. One thing I cannot replicate is the use of fresh whole milk, but have come up with a pretty close substitution. THIS is comfort food at its' finest.
