These are recipes that feature Old Bay as an ingredient. Old Bay isn't something I grew up using - I just purchased my first can recently - so it's new to me and I wanted to collect recipes to see what it's all about.
This was adapted from Aliza Green from Field Guide to Herbs & Spices. A little different from the recipes already here. Traditionally, this seasoning is used for steamed crabs, but is now used for fish, potato salad, potatoes, and other vegetables. This would also make a great gift, along with some recipes! Enjoy!
I'm not a huge fan of the classic sweet potato casserole, so I concocted this dish. The reds, oranges, and yellows are perfect for fall entertaining! Then I decided that the flavors would complement tilapia, orange roughy, or any white fish really well. It was a hit as both a vegetable side and as a full meal.
This is my favorite way to eat potatoes! These are baked, no fat added, and seasoned with very little salt. Great to accompany grilled food or even as an appetizer or snack! Cook/Preparation time does not include time for soaking potatoes in water.
As all you crab afficionados know, the term "Delmarva" refers to the coastal areas bordering on the states of Delaware (Del), Maryland (mar)and Virginia (va) where the world's best crabmeat is harvested. Thing is that a lot of people go to a lot of trouble (and a lot of expense) to buy the best lump crabmeat available -- but then they use a mass-produced commercial product to season it. Weird!
This recipe for 'homemade' seasoning is courtesy of Epicurious. All you Old Bay die-hards, I defy you to try it and tell me you can't taste a difference!! :)
***Update: This is the Crab Cake recipe used for building the Nutty for New England Naughty but Nice Crab Burger for one of the challenges in the Spring 07 Zaar Tour world!
I have lived most of my life near the Chesapeake Bay and spent many summers in Maryland as a child. This is the original recipe that was on the back of the Old Bay can. This version contains baking powder which helps make the crab cakes light and fluffy. We have always added a little lemon juice and browned them in butter which I feel really brings out the flavor and absolutely makes these. Try refrigerating the shaped patties 30 minutes to help keep them together when cooking,
This is a Summertime favorite of ours served with Corn on the Cob and Coleslaw!
One of the best seasonings sold, you can make your own Old Bay Seasoning from recipes on this site(stores well, too). I got this recipe off the Yankee Grocery website. For A Southern twist, use 1-1/2 C Flour....dust chicken, dip in egg mix and redust.....makes a great crust.
I love potatoes boiled in Old Bay....this is kind of a twist on the typical recipe. It is delicious, easy, and requires minimal ingredients. This one tastes a lot more complicated than it really is! If you are sensitive to spicy foods I would half or even quarter the amount of Old Bay used. We like it spicy so this is a spicy recipe.
