This decadent chocolate binge looks impressive, but is surprisingly easy to make. I found this recipe in the September 1989 issue of Good Housekeeping, and it has been my most requested dessert ever since. I had only been experimenting with gluten-free baking for a year at that point, and it was a treat to find a recipe that needed no alterations. The recipe said it serves 16, but I've yet to meet someone who can finish that large a piece! One friend dubbed this "sin on a plate".

    Recipe #208113

I made this for a couple of birthday parties-- amazing! :)

    Recipe #376839

The addition of hot water at the end of this recipe makes for an exceptionally moist cake. Ice cream and warm Chocolate Ganache are also nice accompaniments for this cake.

You'll eat this one all up!!

    Recipe #20888

From "Cook's Country by America's Test Kitchen," episode 101 "Forgotten Cakes." This is their version of the original Blackout Cake, made at the sadly now-closed Ebinger's Bakery in Brooklyn, NY.

    Recipe #327729

This sounds so good! Was going through the pile of papers (that never goes away) on my desk and found this recipe that I'd torn out of a Southern Living magazine. It was submitted by Jerry Mills of Birmingham, AL (where I'm from!). Haven't tried it yet, but am posting to help get rid of the paper pile on my desk!

    Recipe #342918

This recipe makes an elegant cake that is beautiful garnished with fresh fruit such as strawberries. Despite the lengthy instructions and long list of ingredients, the cake is very easy to prepare and assemble.

A good devils food cake, moist and flavorful -- Adapted from Cook's Illustrated

    Recipe #31663

Need I say more...CHOCOLATE! Decadently rich and moist. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and you're in Heaven.

    Recipe #27144

I'm not sure where this recipe originated; I've made it for my family for over 20 years. To me, it tastes like chocolate ice cream. Make it a mocha pound cake by adding 2 tablespoons instant coffee granules! Make the cake extra special by adding Recipe #387021. :) If Hershey's Special Dark dutch-processed cocoa is used, the cake will be a rich dark color! *Note: For a lighter, even more tender cake, separate the eggs; cream in the egg yolks with the butter and sugars; fold the stiffly beaten whites into the batter after the sour cream is added.

From Quick Cooking (now called Simple & Delicious).Moist layers of chocolate cake with a sweet and creamy filling. These treats are handy to keep in the freezer for lunches and snacks.

This cake makes a BEAUTIFUL presentation and if you are a fan of chocolate and raspberry, this is a great recipe for you.

    Recipe #260014

Halloween is such a fun holiday!! Here is a fun tasty cake!!

    Recipe #255703

You won't believe how easy this cake is to make. When you present it to your guests, I promise you will receive "oohs and aahs". It is beautiful to look at and absolutely scrumptious to eat. My father is not quick to dole out compliments on food, he said this was the best cake he has ever had. When strawberries are in peak season I often substitute them for the raspberries.

    Recipe #90774

I have not tried this recipe. I got the recipe from a recipe chat board. You can use 2 qts fresh strawberries, sliced in place of the frozen strawberries.

From the Country Inn, Ft. Bragg, CA circa 1985. I've made this yummy little cake for years...it's a comforting family favorite.

    Recipe #131625

Deliciously moist and rich chocolate cake. A chocolate lovers dream! Very quick and easy to prepare. Our family's favorite cake recipe!

    Recipe #44954

This is the traditional light chocolate cake with the coconut and pecan icing that we remember from our childhood. Note: if you are making the 3 tiered version, I highly recommend you make more of the icing. (It also doesn't hurt to do that if you are making the 2 layered version. Ha ha!) Please use the ingredient amounts in parentheses to increase the yield by about 50%. In response to the one-star review: Yes, it *was* originally called German's Chocolate Cake but most of the mixes, recipes and ads for selling a cake like this, that I see, call it "German Chocolate Cake". That is also what everybody I know calls it and what I would search for if I was looking for the recipe. Therefore, that's what I'm calling mine.

    Recipe #3169

This cake sounds yummy. I have never tried it and am posting it by request. I can't wait to make it though!!

    Recipe #29775

This is a cake that has been made for birthdays for over 50 years in my family. It is 3 layers of dense chocolate cake with a smooth velvety truffle like filling and whipped cream frosting. Sure to please and impress any chocolate lover!
