This is a recipe from Rose Elliot's 'The Vegetarian Kitchen' in the Guardian Weekend supplement. If you can't find toovar dal (check the Indian section of your supermarket) you can substitute yellow split peas, which works just fine and it says you could also use red lentils instead. I used 1 smallish head of savoy cabbage, which once I had trimmed it and shredded it worked out just above the correct weight.
I am trying out several of the ready made vegetarian meat substitutes and this casserole is a result of my trial by fire! Play with the ingredients add more heat, garlic or whatever your favorite herbs and spices are. I look at this recipe as a stepping stone to other recipes. The fried onions that I use in the recipe for the topping are the prepared ones - One brand is French's but you may also buy them in Oriental markets as fried red onions
Posted for Zaar World Tour 2005. Yes, there are other braised cabbage recipes posted, but this not only looks different, it happens to be the lowest fat dish in a cookbook full of very high fat recipes. It also is a breeze to make and utterly delicious. I'm a sucker for caramelized anything. If you prefer a sweeter taste, add a bit more sugar. From a cookbook called The New Irish Table.
I love cabbage, but never liked the other cabbage rolls I ate, so I created this one.
Very different from the usual cabbage roll. Try it--you will like it! Not traditional tomato/rice version-but yummy!
An Indianised way to cook cabbage, and our favorite preparation of the vegetable. If you have a grinder, take the trouble to roast and grind the coriander seeds - the freshly roasted flavor is worth the effort.
Raise the lowly cabbage to something extraordinary! This technique of sautéing brings out a wonderful sweetness you never knew existed in cabbage. You can add different spices to this recipe: curry, caraway seeds, or hot pepper sauce are just suggestions. But try it plain first! Adapted from The Low-Carb Cookbook by Fran McCullough
One day I made this stew for myself (God forbid the kids ever put cabbage in their mouths)They(the kids) accidently ate it mistaking it for my beef stew. They called me on my cell phone and told me that was the best stew I had ever made. I just let it be my little secret about cabbage.
I have never liked Cole Slaw, but after tasting this, I've become a convert. No mayo in this recipe, and the nuts and seeds add a nice crunch you don't usually get. Got the recipe from someone I work with who brought it to a pot luck.
A fantastic vegetarian main dish that goes well with glazed carrots and your favorite cooked grain. I also enjoy making this strudel into individual servings, egg roll style to serve as appetizers, or a side for a bowl of soup.
