I saw Paula Deen makes these cookies on TV and went right out and bought the ingredients to whip up a batch. I modified the recipe slightly by using Maraschino Cherries instead of candied cherries and doubled the quantity. I tend to make my cookies a little smaller so this recipe yielded about 72 cookies.
I cut this from the Winnipeg Free Press Food section on February 25, 2004 and decided to post it here for safe keeping! I plan to try this soon! Cook time does not include the 1 hour chill time for the dough.
When I was growing up, the local bakery made the best peanut cookies. One day, with a large tub of peanut butter cookie dough purchased from a school fundraiser on hand, I had the inspiration to recreate those goodies. These aren't exactly that cookie, but they are very good with a different texture than most peanut butter cookies and lots of chunky peanuts.
These defy description - are they a bar cookie? Or are they candy? Either way they are delicious, very very easy to make. I always make these at holiday time and I also make a big three batch amount to donate to my church's "cookie walk" at our holiday fair. Of course everyone LOVES them. I got this recipe years ago - one of my first years of teaching from a regular substitute teacher who brought them in to share.
