This is another recipe from my childhood. In my home, you always got to request whatever you wanted for dinner on your birthday. Most years, I chose this (and Mom still makes it for me when I ask!). This is a great baked pork chop dish, the sauce keeps the chops from getting dry, and is wonderful to top a side of rice. Feel free to increase the amount of sauce, it's the best part. Don't feel that you need to use the high end center cut chops for this dish, it's a great way to use the less expensive "pork steak" cuts. If you prefer to use fresh mushrooms, add a pint of sliced mushrooms with the bacon and onions.

Another childhood favorite. Mom would serve these for dinner along with lingonberry preserves. Prep time includes 2 hours to rest the batter.

Adapted from the New German Cookbook, by Jean Anderson and Hedy Wurz. Posted for ZWT6. The author included directions for making your own fish stock. If you have the time to make your own stock, please use it here, if not, use the best fish stock you can purchase. I thought this would also be excellent with dill replacing parsley for the final garnish.

From Fine Cooking, Dec 2011. I've adapted these a little bit, using less leek than the original called for. The original also called for 4 small sweet potatoes, which I've never found; the ones I get are a pound or more so I've adjusted the cooking time to reflect this. If you can find small ones, cut back the first baking time to 30 minutes.

    Recipe #470192

Adapted from the City Tavern Cookbook. If you like oysters, give this a try! You can make this ahead if you wish, through the cooking covered for 30 minutes. Cool and refrigerate, then cook the next day uncovered until the top is golden and the stuffing is heated through.

    Recipe #468865

From "Great British Cooking' by Jane Garmey. Fishcakes are a wonderful treat, if made correctly. These are a combination of fish, mashed potato, and a few other things to make them interesting (think using the leftovers after making fish for dinner). Try them with a poached egg on top for breakfast, or with a sauce for a snack or appetizer. Time does not include chilling.

    Recipe #484447

From Great British Cooking by Jane Garmey. This is a perfect dish for a cold, rainy night with a hot loaf of bread. You can make this ahead, since it does take some time; and it will be even better the next day. Just wait to add the sherry until you are reheating for service. I've loved Oxtail Soup since I was a child, and this version is a little more dressed up than the version my mom made...

    Recipe #484445

Adapted from 'Great British Cooking' by Jane Garmey. This is a great spread to serve as an appetizer with toast or crackers.
