These delicate cake-like cookies are glazed with icing and topped with colorful candy sprinkles. They have a mild anise flavoring, which is very typical of Italian baked goods. My family always served these cookies at holidays, weddings or special celebrations, but now that I know the recipe, I can enjoy them all year long!

They sold, quite literally, like hot cakes! This is my Grandmother's recipe, which ,compared to the original, holds a more varied dried fruit. Best to double the recipe as you will never have enough to satisfy everyone.

The episode featured a "Polenta Party" but this light cake sounded so much like it could be a great addition to Thanksgiving or Christmas menus that I wanted to get it down and post it for folks that might want it for their holiday tables. :) It would also be good for Easter! We made the cake for a recent Italian dinner party, and it was a nice, light ending to the meal.

This is from a OAMC website. These are delicious and my kids LOVE these in their lunchboxes. I put them in frozen in the morning and they thaw nicely by lunchtime. Note: I have experimented with reducing the sugar in this recipe and find it works very well. I usually make a double batch and only added 1/3 cup sugar instead of 1 cup. They came out perfect - just the right amount of sweetness.

I wasn't sure how bitter, raw cranberries could turn into this tart-sweet holiday treat. They would be great year-round; however, you must start with fresh cranberries. The following is the original recipe. I had a 7.5 oz pkg of organic cranberries, so I reduced everything by a third. I also only had the ground versions of the cinnamon and cloves. It stilled turned out great, but I would use the whole versions next time.

These cookies are so dainty and pretty that I served them at my daughter's birthday tea. When I make them during the year, I use multicolored sprinkles on top rather than the crushed candy canes. They are on my "must have" list at Christmas. They are always the first to go at a party. I've had several people say, "I just can't stop eating them". Best eaten within about 2 days of baking.
