    Savory Soups

    I love soups and stews, especially in the wintertime when it is snowing outside. Nothing like soup to warm you up! Also included are bread and rolls for dipping. {photo courtesy of - Carla -}

Another one for my growing poverty foods cookbook - who says frugal can't taste fantastic? Thanks AJ from gourmet-recipes-from-around-the-world. Soak the beans overnight (longer but uses no energy) or do the rapid soak - cover with water& bring to a boil, simmer 20 minutes, turn off heat, cover & let sit for an hour.

    Recipe #375547

My Mother found this recipe many many years ago in a local newspaper. The original clipping is long gone now, but it remains a family favorite year after year. You can add mashed potatoes, gravy, leftover veggies...it's all good!"

    Recipe #398914

This is a wonderful way to get your kids to eat cauliflower! It's also delicious served over rice, if you need to stretch the meal. ** This chowder could be served as a vegetarian meal if you substitute the chicken stock with water. For vegan, use non-dairy milk and nut butter. As for vegetarian and vegan topping options try vegan bacon bits/sesame crunches/sticks,

This yummy soup uses Ling Ling brand frozen pot stickers that I buy from Costco. Instead of frozen veggies, I use fresh ones and add water chestnuts and bamboo shoots. If using fresh....it will depend on how crisp you like them...as to when you add them to the soup to cook). This is something my teenage boys really like!

I had seen a similar recipe to this & made a few adjustments to suit our family. I usually make this soup on the stove, but have used a slow cooker for it. We prefer it done on the stove. Adjust the garlic to your own preference, I tend to go on the light side as it can easily overpower the flavours in the soup. I use pot barley, but pearl barley is fine. Use any type of mushrooms you like. Don't leave out the dill weed or the soy sauce, they are an important part of the seasoning in this soup. Serve it with a nice fresh soft or crusty roll or loaf of bread. This will serve 4 as a main course, or about 8 people as a starter.

As I've said before, I LOVE mushrooms, so here is another great recipe using them. Make this with a variety of mushrooms, and hot paprika, or smoked paprika, very nice. This is from Marie on another recipe site. Mega suggested the following: "One thing I changed was to use an 8oz brick of low fat cream cheese instead of the milk and flour. " Give it a try!

A very tasty vegetable soup from Egypt. I just hope that they aren't actually making soup with water from the Nile, lol.

    Recipe #484728

Serve with grilled cheese for a great lunch or dinner.

    Recipe #363625

This is a recipe I got from my daughters mother-in-law, and of course she is one of those wonderful cooks who never has to measure:) So, I've tried as best as possible to give my approx measurements, although you can't really mess this up! I happen to LOVE cilantro and sometimes get carried away, so just remember that any of these ingredients can be adjusted to your own taste. As with most soups, this is better the next day, and also freezes well.

    Recipe #329575

I came up with this recipe by combinding several stuffed pepper soups. When I made this I was craving stuffed peppers but could only eat soup. My future hubby ate this right up and said it tasted better then stuffed peppers.

    Recipe #318557

I found this recipe online and wanted to make a smaller batch, so I'm using the recipe converter. Makes 10 cups of mix, 1 cup of mix combines with other ingredients to make a batch of soup.

    Recipe #409777

My favourite diet soup recipe - high protein, low carb and low fat for a healthy post-gym dinner.

This recipe was discovered in BH&G's Appetizer's publication and is a delicious way to begin a festive meal. Or, make it for a special lunch or light dinner for yourself.

    Recipe #202138

I was hunting through my fridge one day and these ingredients where what I had on hand. I love this soup because the sweet potato gives just enough sweetness and a velvety texture. It's perfect on a cold day with some crusty bread and a salad.

    Recipe #196723

Posted for Zaar World Tour 2005. It's from a special edition of Saveur, The Best of Tex-Mex Cooking. They recommend you use 2 cups dried navy beans soaked overnight, but I've altered the recipe and cooking time for canned. I also halved the amount of oil. When I tried this it made a rather soupy stew; if you prefer your stews drier, I suggest cutting back on the broth, and add more if it gets too dry.

    Recipe #134188

Flavorful, filling, healthy and delicious, this is more colorful and interesting than basic beans and rice...kidneys, black beans, garbanzos, spices and a dollop of peanut butter make this dish awesome, and it's easy to make! Seems a bit thicker than a stew to me. Oh, and my toddler loves it!
