    It's sour cherry-I think. Something like that. Oh, I did find
    aleppo powder but I just couldn't justify buying a 10-12 ounce
    container of it. I will look around some more here locally and try to find
    it either in a smaller jar or in bulk. If not, I will buy the large container
    and if you want some, Elmo' (or anyone else) just holler!

    I noticed that Willliams-Sonoma sells it. Here's what I found on their website:

    'Named for the Syrian town of Aleppo, just east of the Turkish border, these red chilies are also known as Near East or halaby peppers. Moderately hot, the crushed, dried chili peppers are celebrated for their rich, fruity flavor that's sometimes described as a cross between cumin and cayenne.
    Aleppo chili peppers are characterized by moderate heat and a complex fruity flavor with a subtle, tangy-sweet finish.

    A bright, lively seasoning for grilled steak or chicken.

    Sprinkle these crushed red peppers over everything from pizza and pasta to potatoes, deviled eggs or tuna salad.

    Whole chilies are naturally sun-dried for ten days, then seeded and crushed to ensure peerless flavor and aroma.

    This premium, all-natural spice is sourced from Syria by a family-owned artisanal spice company in Northern California's Napa Valley.

    yes, it's cherry, although I don't know about sour:

    Mahlab is an aromatic spice made from the seeds of a species of cherry, Prunus mahaleb (the St Lucie cherry, aka the Mahaleb cherry).[1][2] The cherry stones are cracked to extract the seed kernel, which is about 5 mm diameter, soft and chewy on extraction. The seed kernel is ground to a powder before use. Its flavour is similar to a combination of bitter almond and cherry.[3] It is used in small quantities to sharpen sweet foods.

    It has been used for centuries in the Middle East and the surrounding areas as a flavoring for baked goods. In Greek American cooking, it is the characteristic flavoring of Christmas cake and pastry recipes. Thanks to renewed interest in Mediterranean cooking it has been recently mentioned in several cookbooks.

    Still, a wee finger dip taste reminded me of cinnamon. icon_wink.gif

    Sharon, I was mortified that I missed a tag so completely but I can't find it. Are you sure you tagged that recipe for Ramadan Tag? I didn't see it in NA/ME Tag, either. icon_confused.gif
