About 15 years ago I found a recipe with a layer of potato on the bottom of a casserole dish, covered with rice, with pockets of dried fruit and nuts in the rice, with saffron butter poured over. It was amazing. I lost the recipe. Does anyone have it?

You might want to post in the North African/Middle East forum, someone who frequents that forum may know. http://www.food.com/bb/viewforum.zsp?f=59
Do you remember the source of your recipe?

Bon Appetit and Gourmet recipes are on the Epicurious website. Fifteen years is a long time, but it may be there.

I found these recipes very similar to your description and perhaps you can adapt them to the one you want, by adding the potato crust and combining with some of the ingredients listed in this jeweled rice with dried fruits recipe:

You're probably referring to tadig/tadik/tahdig (goes by several spellings).
It is not North African but Persian/Iranian. Rice is my favorite food and tadig is beyond description-it's that good.

Here is one recipe that might fit the bill:

Type in the words 'chelo' or 'polow' and that might guide you to
the type of recipe you're searching.
