The Viking age in European history was about AD 700 to 1100. The Vikings were people from Scandinavia, who left Scandinavia and travelled to other countries. Some went to fight and steal treasure. Others settled in new lands as farmers, craftsmen or traders.

The Vikings were very good sailors. They built boats that were very long and narrow. They were called longships or dragonships, because they had giant wood carvings of dragons that were displayed at the front of the boat. The dragon was used so that people would be frightened. Each longboat could carry over 100 people.

The name 'Viking' comes from a language called 'Old Norse' and means 'a pirate raid'. People who went off raiding in ships were said to be 'going Viking'.

The Vikings worshipped many gods and told stories about their gods, giants and monsters are known as Norse myths. The most known of these myths in the story of Thor, the god of thunder.

Stories about the Vikings have held fascination and today we think of the Vikings as being strong rulers, sailors and warriors.

Select your young artist and have them draw or color a Viking masterpiece for your team.
It can be hand drawn or printed from the net and they may color with pencils, paints or crayons, or use *any* thing around your kitchen.

Scan a copy of your masterpiece or take a photo of it and post it to this thread.
(You will need to upload your photo or scanned artwork from your PC to an image hosting website first)

For anyone not wishing to have kids draw their own picture.........
I've found some coloring printables on the net.

    Please remember to:
~ select your budding young artist and have them use their artistic flair
~ scan or photograph the artwork (the artist too if you wish)
~ Post your completion in this thread -Include your team name, details of your artist and your saved image of the artwork
`Post your completion in your team thread

I wanna play!!! Question though - can it be a group project done by a group of kids ages 8-13 who all contribute to ONE work of art??? Or does it need to be one work of art by one single artist...

Yesterday I sat my son down with a book about the vikings, and a bunch of craft supplies.

He decided to make a popsicle stick model ship, with bamboo skewer posts and paper towel sails. But after he spent an hour making the base, he decided to leave it a raft, because "the Vikings had to have rafts Mom, so this is my Viking craft." icon_wink.gif

The little girl I was watching also sat with us, and I tried to get her to paint, but really she just sat on my lap while I painted...
