What is the taste - is this like sour cream, only sweeter?

Pretty much, although I wouldn't say "sweeter", but "not as sour", if that makes any sense. Commercial sour cream has lots of additives and gums.

It's super simple to make and won't curdle like sour cream does when it's heated. All you need is some cream, a scrupulously clean jar, and a bit of buttermilk. It's just like making yogurt, except at room temperature. Once you try it you'll be hooked.
