    My crock pot settings

    I have a plain old Rival crockpot that most folks have. It's time settings are 4,6,8,& 10 hours. However, lots and lots of recipes call for " cook in high" or "cook on low". OR, the just say "8-10 hrs". that is a big difference". SO, what setting do I use if I have two setting in each category? Recipes written the correctly say specifically , either 4,6,8 or 10. What should I use when they are so vague in most recipes that are not correctly designated exactly as they should be?

    Hmm, I've never seen those kind of settings on a crockpot. I have two, one older, the other newer They have High and Low settings. High would be for things that typically cook in 4 or fewer hours, Low would typically be six or more hours of cooking.

    You might want to fill it up halfway with water, set it on one of the settings, and then measure the temperature after about an hour. The heat of the water should give you some indication of how hot it is running. Newer crockpots run at about 200 deg on low, and 300 deg on High. Since yours is older , it might run lower on some of the longer hour settings. But this might give you a better idea of which setting to choose.

    That's the only one I know of with the hours on it. However, like duonyte said, the high hours are 4-6 and the low are 8-10, so it's basically just like any other crock pot as far as settings. Her advice on heating the water to test the temperature is an excellent idea.

    I used to have 5 crock pots (I just gave one away), and they range from 25 years old to 1 year old. The biggest difference is the temperature they heat to. Over the last 15 years people started to become aware of safe cooking temperatures, and the concern over food not heating quickly enough to a safe temp in a crock pot forced the Rival company (and others following) to change their temperature settings from low at 180° to 200°. My crock pots from before this time (2) I use for desserts, overnight oatmeal or other foods that will burn easily. The newer crock pots I use for beef and beans. Chicken is tricky, because it will go dry very quickly in the new crocks. I sometimes use the old crock if I'm going to be gone, and the new crock if I will be home with it.
    My newer crocks I cook EVERYTHING on Low. I never use the High setting because it's just too hot. My newest crock has a meat thermometer in it, and I can set the crock to cook to a specific temperature inside the meat. That is the most accurate way to cook beef and pork without burning or drying it out.
    Basically, my best advice is to cook on Low. And check everything after a few hours.
