I started putting restrictions on my smoking about five years before I
actually stopped. No cigs in the house, no cigs in the car, which cut back
on my urges in the middle of winter.

But I have to share a funny story about the dog. When I was still smoking,
every time the phone rang, I'd grab the phone, cigs and lighter and head out
    the back door.

Imagine my surprise when, the day after I stopped, the phone rang and the
dog shot out through the dog door. He was standing outside wondering
where in the heck his mum was! It was really funny to see him look
questioningly at me through the window in the kitchen door. It took a couple
of days for him to figure out that I was no longer heading outside every time
    the phone rang.
