    I thought this would be interesting and educational to post here, in this thread. It's something I've done alot of reasearch on myself, because of my son.

    Since late summer, we have cut out any foods containing the ingredient Yellow #5, out of my 4 y/o son's diet. We had a problem with his hyperactivness. I work at a hospital and 2 girls in the lab told me that they have read up on this food ingredient and it's worse than the dye Red #40. This yellow dye has actually been banned in countries such as Norway.

    DH, myself, family, teachers and even his doctor have noticed a tremendous difference in his behavior since we've cut this out. I'm sure that maturity also is playing a part, but I truly believe this has something to do with it too.

    Below, in the next post, is a list of all the foods containing this ingredient.

    By law, the Yellow #5 ingredient (or any #'d color dye for that matter) must be stated as is on the food package. If the label states "artificial coloring, Beta Carotene or Annatto for coloring", it does not contain the yellow dye and is fine to eat.

    It doesn't have to be yellow to have the ingredient in it. It's in alot of processed chocolate foods, including cereal, puddings and cake mixes. Most important thing to do is read all labels!

    prescription and non-prescription pharmaceutical drugs (kids chewable vitamins....I have found 2 kinds that don't contain this color); chewable pills for colds/fever reducers

    skim milk Read labels. I haven't come across any with the dye ingredient yet. It is in some of the flavored milks like vanilla and banana flavored.

    yogurt (like the Yoplait Trix)

    butter/margarine Read labels. I haven't come across any with the dye in as of yet.

    orange colored cheeses (Velveeta)

    pickles The only brand I have found that doesn't contain the yellow is the Claussen brand

    Kraft Macaroni and Cheese ("Kraft Dinner")

    Orange colored snacks (Doritos, Cheetos, cheese curls (my son eats White Cheddar cheese curls instead); Ranch flavored Bugles, cheddar butter popcorn, etc.

    Candy M&M's, Butterfingers, gummy bears, lollipops, Starburst, Smarties, Nerds, Pez, Sweet Hearts.....just about all colored candies

    Colored Marshmallows

    Fruit Snacks It's in the Twistables, Fruit Roll ups, Fruit Gushers, etc. You have to read the labels; the strawberry flavored ones tend to be the only flavored snacks that don't contain the yellow dye

    Gelatin and pudding desserts It's in most Snack Pack pudding cups/jello cups, Chocolate, Vanilla, Butterscotch, Banana, lemon, etc, etc, etc. It's in the powder pudding mixes, including chocolate. I usually buy Kozy Shack pudding, already made in a 16 oz tub. For jello cups, I usually have to buy strawberry or raspberry.
    *It is not in Hunt's Rice Pudding Snack Packs

    Ice Cream Check the labels, I've found it to be in some, not others....depends mostly on the candy ingredient but not limited to that

    Popcicles...some, check the labels

    Frozen snack foods I've found it to be in those little pizza rolls, the Cheeseburger flavor; just read labels.

    Frozen breakfast foods: I've found this in Pillsbury, Aunt Jamima and store brands..... french toasts, waffles, pancakes, etc. Again, read labels.

    Mountain Dew It's also in other colored sodas, like orange, some lemon-lime brands

    Tang, No "orange drink" at McDonald's anymore!

    other artificially colored drinks Read the labels. If a juice says "artificial coloring" it does not have the #'d dyes and is fine. By law, if a # dye is used in any product, it must state exactly what # dye on the package. It's in some Kool Aid flavors and not in others.

    boxed breakfast cereals Read labels. It's in Capn Crunch Chocolate balls, Trix, Fruit Loops, Kellogs Cinnamon Bun cereal as well as their Chocolate Cinnamon Bun cereal, etc. It's also in some Pop Tarts.

    shrimp I'm not too sure about this; maybe it's in the canned tiny shrimp?

    canned fruits and vegetables Check labels, though I haven't found any to date to contain the dye

    pastas Check labels; I'm thinking it may be in the canned pastas/frozen pasta dinners

    Boxed side dishes/dinners Cheese flavored rices and noodles, mashed potatoes, scallopped potatoes, Hamburger Helper, One dish casserole meals, Chef Boy R Dee One Dish meals,'s in McCormicks Spaghetti Sauce powder envelope

    breads, cakes, and other baked goods (especially ones that contain "candied fruit") It's in colored sprinkles, chocolate frostings, vanilla frostings, boxed cake mixes including chocolate cake and brownies (check labels, some have it in, some don't), cupcakes, cookies including Iced Animal Crackers. Donuts, depending on the icing and of course, sprinkles or any kind of cute, shaped toppings.


    alcoholic drinks (especially mixed drinks like sours but also some beer!)

    Also found in: (some people have skin allergies from the yellow dyes...)
    birth control pills

    Your welcome and thank you. icon_redface.gif I did this researching all on my own, my doctor was pretty impressed with my findings.

    If you are interested in reading about the yellow #5 or any other colored dyes, here are some interesting sites to check out: Europe seems to do alot more studies on these food additives than we do. On this site, check out the "benzoic acid" additive information.... the foods it's in (in alot of foods also containing the yellow #5) and how the two ingredients work together to create hyperactivity. Here, you can read up on all the color additives, what colors are in what, what good substitutions are used in place of the dyes.

    Yellow #6 is another one I stay away from, though it's not as effective as the #5 or the red #40.

    The only problem is trying to weed out all foods with dyes. It's not impossible but it's pretty darn hard to do! icon_lol.gif If you need to cut out all dyes, you pretty much have to follow the Feingold diet which is very strict, especially for a child.

    Wow, thanks for going through all that for me! I guess I should have told you that the Feingold program gives you a whole book with food and non-food lists of the products that are safe to use.
    But THANK YOU for being so thoughtful to do that for me. I guess I have found a new friend! icon_razz.gif
    I was, however, surprised about the pickles. I don't buy them for him because he and I don't eat them, but I didn't even think to check the food list for it because I do buy them for my husband and daughter.
    What is the name of the chewable cold medicine? Do you know if it has ANYTHING artificial in it? So far, what we can use if very limited, and I'm sure that there are some products out there that haven't been tested by the Feingold people yet because new things are always coming on the market. I've actually volunteered to be one of their product researchers so maybe I could even call the manufacturer and find out what things are in it that may not even be on the lablel. You may probably already be aware, but there are often hidden artificial ingredients in things but they don't say so on the label because of the loose FDA regulations. Such as, if a product contains "chocolate chips," the maker does not need to tell you in the ingredient list that those chocolate chips are made with vanillin instead real vanilla. Therefore, you may be ingested something fake without you even realizing it.
    In other words, although they have to tell you all the ingredients, they don't have to tell you what's every ingredient they use. That's why we're advised to just follow their list because at least all those products have been thoroughly researched.

    That list is amazing. Who would have thought? The one thing that came to mind was the shrimp. I purchase salmon alot and will only buy the wild Alaskan salmon. It also says that it contains no artifical colors. Maybe they add the dye to cooked shrimp to give it that bright color?

    I just reread my email to you and I can't believe all the typos!!! I even proofread it! icon_rolleyes.gif

    I've been pretty lax on the non-food items, but I think I'm going to get more serious about it. What's the difference from putting something into your mouth, versus it being absorbed into your body through your skin??? Either way it gets in there and affects you. I'm going to check out your lists.

    Wow, I am shocked! My son loves the tarty candies, most of the time his face breaks out as he is eating them. Like a really light form of hives...light red blotches on his face that do not hurt or itch him.

    Could he be allergic to Yellow #5 or a different #'d Dye????
