I don't watch a lot but when I can I watch Property Guys, House Hunters etc.
Am I being a mean old hag wanting to slap some of these 'kids'? They have limited budgets but HUGE expectations and the phrase I hear over and over ad nauseam is "the kitchen (and baths) needs updating".

Now I live in a house that is over 95 yo and I'd kill for a kitchen that these folk despise. Is it me?

No, its not you. I used to enjoy those shows, but stopped watching them because of the superficial reasons they kept coming up with for not buying a house ("Ewww, the color on those walls is awful." "I can't live in that house, I hate the wallpaper in the bathroom."). Their whining made me nuts.
Nothing that a few cans of paint and a little hard work couldn't cure. It seems they don't want to work to make an affordable house their own. They expect their first house to be "picture perfect" with en suite bathrooms for every bedroom, and "house beautiful" landscaping. They really need a reality check!

The one I cannot watch anymore is 'My House, Your Money'
I'm torn between hating the superficial, entitled and lazy adult children and their overly indulgent or interfering parents.
Hey! You are lending them a downpayment - you don't get to call the shots imo. The adult children...well of course they NEED the best of everything.

I think I like Property Guys the best. I love watching the transformation from squalid to splendid.

ETA - I do realize that these programs are for entertainment and wonder what it says about us as a culture that we find so much of this entertaining.

How about this line over and over again:

"Oh the appliances aren't stainless steel..."

"Oh, I really wanted granite counters."

Whatever happened to buying a starter home you can afford?

Personally, I would never want stainless steel appliances. I wouldn't be able to stand cleaning it every 5 minutes.

I do like to watch the real estate shows because I am nosy and like to see people's decorating styles (or lack there of).

It's a topic in this house. I have told DH that we can never have stainless because he sits in the LR and throws a ball in to the kitchen for the dogs to fetch. Stainless would be completely dented by now!

I happen to love the CHARM of a cute older home! My home was built in the fifties and is a cute cape-cod! It has the style and coziness that I love! I can't stand the shows where the "kids" want everything done...don't they want to make a home their own style? They don't want to invest any hard work into paint, paper, etc. Not for me.

I have a stainless steel sink and hate it! They always have water spots if you don't CONSTANTLY wipe them down with a dry cloth.

I've gotta have clean sinks and clean floors or I get very grumpy.

ME TOO! My stainless steel sink drives me bonkers with the water spots near the faucets. I was going to post about it to see if anyone has any tricks for keeping it clean looking. My sink looks yicky even after I clean and wipe it. It'll be shiny clean, but still streaky looking around the faucet. Gag!

don't get me started on 'Those' home shows.....it would turn into the thread that never ends & then some.
I agree, making a place into 'my style' is work but fun & gives me a feeling of having done something.

How about those with a $700, 000. purchasing budget!

Sometimes I will watch some of the "home" buying shows but not often. While it is hard to believe, many of them are extremely close to real life. I actively sold real estate for about 6 years in the late 1980s, early 1990s. What buyers expect versus what they can afford is nuts! I enjoy putting my personality on a home but many people want to just walk in and live, even though they have a champagne appetite on a beer income.

I do enjoy House Hunters International. It's amazing to see houses (or 200 year old ruins) sell without kitchens or baths and then see the final home. However the money in play on those shows is mind boggling.

Many of the home buyers just flabbergast me. " I can spend $100,000 and want 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a large yard, gourmet kitchen with granite countertops, updated everything and be in the heart of San Francisco with an ocean view." Can we say CLUELESS!

They pass up perfectly fine, apparently structurally sound homes because they don't like the paint color or light fixtures. IDIOTS!

DH did real estate for many years and people really are as depicted on the shows. Their expectations and reality often collide.

I sold real estate many years ago in a much different market than this. Interest rates were really high. I loved working with first time buyers. Based on what I've seen on these shows expectations have changed substantially in 25 years. Back then young adults were just tickled to be able to afford a home and didn't seem to have issues with fixing things as they went along. Again - I suspect that they select obnoxious people for the entertainment value - the shows seem pretty much scripted.
