*Fly Bait
Water
about 1 cup white sugar
some vinegar to keep the bees from getting caught
a couple of drops of dish soap
part of a banana peel
*Fruit Fly Bait
Water
about 1 cup white sugar
some vinegar to keep the bees from getting caught
peels or any discarded parts of just about any fruit.
Some fluid for them to drown in the bottom.
*Wasp Bait
The problem with catching wasps is that you will probably catch beneficial bees as well. Experiment by putting vinegar in it to see if the wasps are still attracted and not the bees.
Fruit juice
Beer
Sweet Soda Pop
a couple of drops of dish soap
If you need protein baits: Try adding a piece of raw hamburger or a chunk of canned tuna, canned dog or cat food to a trap with fruit juices or even plain water (deep enough to drown the wasps but the piece of meat bait needs to be sticking out above the liquid surface to effectively attract the wasps).
*Tips:
Do not fill the trap so full of bait that there isn’t plenty of air space between the bottom (or top) of the pop bottle opening, you want the wasps to be able to fly in with no trouble.
Empty and refill the wasp traps regularly, wasps won’t be too tempted by a trap filled with drowned wasps. You can submerge the trap in a bucket of water for about 1/2 hour to make sure all wasps are dead before cleaning and refilling.
Fill the bottle up to about 1/2? from the inverted opening There are other recipes for homemade fly bait on the internet and you can try some variations to see what works best in your area. You can also purchase fly bait liquid and add this and water to your own traps if you don’t want to brew your own. The flies go in, thinking they have found fly nirvana, but have a hard time finding the opening to escape before they tire and drown. Fill the bottle up to about 1/2? from the inverted opening I cut the string when the traps are full and burn them with the feed sacks and replace the traps as needed. A two liter bottle will hold a great number of pests that would otherwise be tormenting the horses. It takes only a few moments (my, how time flies) to make a trap.
