File, or gumbo file, is ground sassafras leaf. It adds a distinctive flavor and acts as a thickener.

In this case it is a seasoning added at serving.

I have Burma brand "Gumbo File" and it is a combination of ground: coriander, thyme, parsley, rosemary, bay leaves and sassafras
