Keep an eye out. I never noticed them either ... then all of a sudden - there they were. I think I just passed them buy. Sometimes a Hispanic/Mexican market carries them too. I know mine does.

Now that you mention it...I believe I have seen them in the Mexican market before, just not the others.

They use green tomatoes in some recipes - not just tomatillos. But down here in FL, Miami with the Latino influence and the southern component, we have several Mexican Hispanic areas. And yep, they very often carry them.

I have to green the recipe; but my friend makes a recipe using day old corn bread muffins, green tomatoes, cheese and egg. Baked like a strata. It is the BEST. I got to find that casserole.

This Mexican market is the only in my area that I'm aware of. It is small, very small. But you can find stuff you will not find in any other business around. They are to be counted on for many things to me...I'll pick up things that I have no idea what they are to try out. I attempt to find out (usually with success) how to use them. I speak very little (not even basic Spanish), and most of the crew speak little English. I love going there icon_biggrin.gif

Some of the things I've found there, and tried...Jamaica, Tamarind, fresh Nopals, and Chayote (which is now in the mainstream stores - saw 'em first here though),

Fun to try things that you have no idea what it is. We have a couple of markets; and the one is really helpful. They even have a recipe of the day. They print out a small sheet you can take with you and they make a batch and give samples out on Mon, Wed, and Sat. I've tried some stuff I had no clue what they were, but it was fun to try. They try to make it so people won't be afraid to try something new.
