Remember that wherever you are in the USA you will have the influence of regional accents - just like in Italy each region has its own dialect.
I am from NYC, and a first generation Southern Italian/American, and gnocchi is pronounced "nyokee" not "no kee" (which leaves out the "y" sound that the gno makes).
gnocchi:
"gno" = nyo (the g is silent)
"cch" = a hard K
"i" = ee like tree
nyokee would be the correct pronunciation, that said....keep in mind regional accents. What you may be hearing in Ohio is the local/regional Ohio accent combined with "nyokee"
Gnocchi is one of those frequently mispronounced Italian words in English speaking countries; "bruschetta" is another.
As mentioned above ch in Italian is
always pronounced with a hard K sound.
Properly pronounced, the word is brus-Ket-ta, not like many restaurant servers insist "bru-sh-etta" (the sh being pronounced like the sh in shush)
