If we all face the facts, the term chili, is just that. It's a "term" that has become "generic" in the USA to the point of being somewhat pointless to name. Whether its "Cincinatti", Southern, Tex-mex, South Beach, or Pioneer, it's all become a matter of preference. Very few recipes are "original" to the degree of ancient derivatives.
Don't sweat it! Make it like you like it, and call it anything you want....original, ancient, Tex-Mex, Barbara's Best Backyard Beans, and Beef....The arguments about chili have gone on for some years, and will likely be around when we are all gone.
Make it with lamb, pork, beef or kangaroo. Just be sure you call it "chili".
Simply, if you want to use TVP, quinoa, beans, barley, or bok choy. Enjoy it the way you like it, and end the debate. Keep a secret
I recently came across a recipe for waffles that calls for cilantro. It just might be damned good with a heap of anyone's fave "chili".
