There are few things as American as apple pie, as the saying goes, but like much of America's pie tradition, the original apple pie recipes came from England.
These pre-Revolutionary prototypes were made with unsweetened apples and encased in an inedible shell. Yet the apple pie did develop a following and now its one of the most popular desserts.

Dutch apple pie recipes are distinct in that they typically call for flavourings such as cinnamon and lemon juice to be added. Dutch apple pies are usually decorated in a lattice style.
Dutch apple pies may include ingredients such as raisins and icing, in addition to ingredients such as apples and sugar, which they have in common with other recipes.
In English speaking countries, apple pie is a dessert of enduring popularity, eaten hot or cold, on its own or with ice cream, double cream, or custard.

The Swedish style apple pie is predominantly a variety of apple crumble, rather than a traditional pastry pie. Often breadcrumbs are used (wholly or partially) instead of flour, and sometimes rolled oats. It is usually flavoured with cinnamon and served with vanilla custard or ice cream.

One of the favourite apple pies in Britain is Blackberry and apple - there is nothing more relaxing than going out blackberry picking. Wandering down lanes where the brambles have grown and the fruit is right for the picking and then going home to cook that pie!
