    Slow Cooker Spells Comfort Food

    Comfort foods are rich, filling, easy to make and eat, and they are delicious.



    Combine those with the crockpot and you have crockpot comfort foods, with some sure-fire winners! The crockpot cooks these recipes to perfection, and you hardly have to do a thing.




    Do you own one of these miracle appliances? Whether you say crockpot or slow cooker, it is the same well loved appliance in our kitchen. I have been feeding my family with this helper for a long time and still use it at least once week. I now have the large Crockpot and smaller version that I use more often at this point.

    I find that a lot of recipes show times that are too long for modern slow cookers. I usually don't want meat falling off the bone - I like to be able to slice things. So I watch the time carefully the first time I make something.

    I also find that meats taste better if they've been browned ahead of time, for most recipes. I deglaze the pan and add that to the slow cooker.

    The slow cooker does provide a lot of flexibility. I have my ancient 3 or 3 1/2 qt one that I use a great deal - the lid broke a long time ago, so I cover with a double layer of foil and then stick a saucepan lid on top of that - none of them are quite the right size, but this works for me. My larger one is 5 quarts.
