I was just thinking about 9/11 today. I remember a story about rescue dogs who suffered, because they kept finding dead bodies. I know it's a depressing thing to say, but it reminds me that dogs feel just as much as humans do, and they did a good job of helping rescue workers.

There was a special on the Animal Planet network last night about the dogs. Most of the live rescue dogs were getting depressed and so their handlers had other workers "hide" in the rubble so they could be "found" and the dogs were happy about that. What I found REALLY interesting is that a couple of handlers said that while their dogs were not specifically trained as cadaver dogs, after awhile they seemed to understand and started finding bodies. One handler said that her dog was trained to do both (with different commands) and usually had no heart for finding bodies, but he seemed to "get" the situation and the first time she gave him the command to find a body he went at it. Almost all of these dogs are at the Bridge now... I think one is still alive.

I know it was so hard on them. That special sounds great and what a cool idea to hide so the dogs could find someone and feel better.
