What a delicious change good old Comfort Food makes after all the festive meals that we have recently enjoyed celebrating the holidays right through to New Years Day.

Everyone loves the old favorites from warming soups to meat loaf, pot pies and stews plus desserts and puddings so come and join us for some great ideas

Comfort food. It even sounds warm and welcoming - like cuddling up by the fire on a cold winter day. Comfort food trends have seen a real resurgence in recent years and our desire for comfort food seems to be holding strong. So what is comfort food? Generally it's the food we have good memories about, the food we think of when we hear the word homemade, and that reminds us of simpler times.

    Chinese Fried Rice
    Weight Watchers Chicken Pot Pie
Spanish Comfort Food (egg & Sausage Casserole)
The list of favorite comfort foods can be different for each of us. While homemade macaroni and cheese and meatloaf with mashed potatoes have been staples for many of us, for some of us comfort food may include a delicious cheesy lasagna, or yummy sweet potato pie. We all tend to love the food that takes us back to our roots - the foods we grew up with.

By now, most of those who know me also know that I am a brown-meat, skin-on type of chicken girl!

My top-of-the-pops comfort food is a roast chicken -- preferably with potatoes baked in the same dish. I have no idea how prices compare, but in South Africa it is more economical to buy a whole chicken than chicken pieces.

Here are some of the top roast chicken recipes on Food.com, although putting "roast chicken" in the search line brings up dozens of recipes:

    Mermaid's Tender Roast Chicken
    Lemon and Garlic Roast Chicken
    Roast Crock Pot Chicken
Easy Honey & Lime Roast Chicken
    Roast Chicken with Spiced Yogurt

    One picture to illustrate:

Sides which go well with roast chicken are the already-mentioned baked potatoes, a simple steamed green bean dish, steamed butternut squares -- any fresh veggies, actually. And a sliced-tomato salad with thinly-sliced onions and some sliced basil is almost a must!

I have grown into the Arabian culture although I still love the saying of a Pakistani shiek (religious scholar) who once told my Dh "culture is under our feet", referring to the 'bad' things cultures have.

My Dh's family background is Iraqi and this is there comfort food,

    Iraqi Stuffed Zucchini (Cousa Mashi)

Does comfort food always look ugly?

My ultimate comfort food is macaroni & cheese - actually the cheese sauce. mmmmMMMMM! it's also very good on broccoli & cautliflower. icon_smile.gif and potatoes. and rice! yeah...cheese sauce.

I love grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. So comforting. I also love a good broccoli cheese soup in the winter. Macaroni and cheese is another winner. I see a cheese theme emerging.
    Hot chocolate is also comforting.

Zurie I have saved Roast Chicken with Spiced Yogurt as with spices like that its just up my ally. Yes, browned meat - oh yum specially served with lovely vegetables and gravy if its a roast is real comfort food.

Cheese makes any meal into a comfort food as it just seems to add that extra something.

Soups are just out of this world and there is a thread on soups that will be out in a couple of days

UmmBinat I do agree that sometimes comfort food can look unattractive and a bit stodgy but the flavour is great.

We love tagines as well they are a great comfort food and one that I use quite a lot is Best Chicken Tagine its delicious and also is cooked in the oven as I cant use a tagine as I have an induction cooking top and cant use pottery.

Elmotoo - hot puddings on cold days - yum!
