We are welcoming in the new year and saying goodbye to all those wonderful but not so healthy goodies from the holidays. I know I had a couple extra bites of potato salad and ham, maybe one or two pieces of candy and cookies....well lets not talk about the cookies.
How did you do over the holiday season? Were you able to just say NO? Does the waistband on your jeans fit a little snugger? Need to dust off your exercise bike? Still have powdered sugar stuck to your fingers?

My name is Laury and I am another co-host. I don't make resolutions for the new year but I do set goals for myself.. Right now I weigh 152 and my goal is to get closer to 140. I exercise 4 days a week by walking 3-10minute periods inside the apartment.
What are your goals for 2013? Do you exercise? How do you exercise and how much do you do? What can we do to help you?

Hey, I am Jacqueline and I, too, am a co-host of this forum. I hate exercise but know it has to be done to lose. I am also a gastric by pass patient. I had lost close to 100 lbs but have gained 30 since this summer, due to having to take some steriods and developing bad eating habits during that time. My goal is to get those 30 lbs off and once they are gone, I wil be working on new ones. I am having shoulder surgery in January and this kind of worries me due to exercise and not being able to do any. I am so proud of myself, I went to the grocery store today and did not buy one thing that was unhealthy. If it is in my house I will eat it so the best way for me not to eat it is to not have it around. I'd love for folks to share heatlhy recipes for one person. I love to cook but I hate cooking for just me.

I'm Bonnie G #2 living in Trinidad at present and finding it difficult to stay on a healthy eating routine. Before coming here I'd lost about 25#, but with the holidays have gained back way to much over 8# and my goal is to just take off those 8# and then I'll decide what is next. I've discovered for me small goals are the best way to go.
As for excercise, I've found that difficult as I've got something wrong with the bottom of my foot that makes walking hard and I had back surgery a few months ago that slows me down - but then I know that's an excuse as we have a pool downstairs I could be using. I have purchased a Pilates CD and hoping that will stimulate me to start moving.
Quite frankly, I feel that when it comes to moving I'm pretty lazy and really need to push myself.

Hello my name is Deb and I have lost 89 pounds and kept it off over the last few years.
My goal this is year is not only to keep the weight off which will be harder than ever with the changes coming up this year in all aspects of my life.
My second goal is to try and get in at least some exercise as it is something I hate with a passion. Used to walk about 30 minutes a day but lost my dog two weeks ago and have only walked once without her and Hated it.

debbwl, 89 pounds is a tremendous weight to lose. How did you do it? debbwl, I understand how boring walking can be. Do you walk outside or inside? If you are outside, you can notice so much from nature and other things. I am required to walk in our apartment which isn't that big. I try to turn something to watch on TV while I'm walking. It does seem to make the exercising more interesting.

I had a welcome surprise this morning. When I got on the scales, which I do most every day and I know that is bad, I had lost about 4 lbs. Welcome 2013 and if this is any kind of indication as to how you are going to treat me, bring it on.

Thanks Laury, lost all the weight through life style changes. Started out by fallowing the doctor’s advice of going vegetarian four days a week and cutting out 95% of white stuff such as flour, past and sugar. Once I had gotten used to that then I started working on portion control and saying no to most pot luck and party food by either eating beforehand or taking something I could nibble on like a vegetable tray. Last every time someone asked about my diet I would say there is no diet I have made some permanent life style changes.
As for the walking I used to take my dog out but her passing has taken my desire to go out away. Like your idea of putting the T.V. on and committing to doing it to the same show every day. Maybe a new tradition is what I need now my little friend is gone. Yes I am still grieving her passing much to the dismay of all those I know who think I should have been over it after a day or two (its two weeks since I lost her).
Jacqueline, you are not the only one who weighs every day I find it helps keep me in check by making me think twice before I fix my breakfast and pack my lunch for the day as well as when the late night munchies hit I can think about how good I will feel the next day if I when I weigh in if I skip the snack.

Deb, I am surprised that your doctor wanted you to give up meat 4 days a week. My doctor doesn't encourage me to do that at all. She feels my body needs the protein. My health isn't good so I do listen to what my doctor recommends.
If you notice that you want evening snacks, how about having some raw vegetables or fruit? I have been told that if my body demands food, I better feed it something.
We all grieve in our own time!! There is nothing wrong with it for as long as you need to.

Hi y'all! I enjoyed every mouthful of "bad" stuff I ate over the holidays but I am so ready to get back on track with eating healthy and exercising. I feel so much better when I do!
I've lost about 60 pounds over the last year and a half, and I'd like to lose another 50. I'm not on any particular diet. (I hate that word!) I just try to make healthier choices. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. I make a big pot of vegetable soup every weekend to take to work for lunches..... no particular recipe, I just wing it with whatever looks good at the grocery or the farmer's market. I drink a lot of water and green tea and I don't drink sodas at all. I also go to a Zumba class 2-3 times a week. Here's to a healthier 2013!

Hello Everyone, I finally decided to get off my phone and onto a computer so I HAVE TO officially join the group. LOL
I got on the scale this morning, after 2 weeks of avoiding it. I was 168.8 lb I gained 5 lbs but I am up 22.6 from my lowest weight, and only 6.2 from what I think was my heaviest weight.
I have been though alot of stress lately and have totally slacked off any healthy eating and exercise. In reality I have been emotionally eating.
At the end of summer I found out my sister has Breast Cancer and although it was caught early, it still brought up alot of emotion because our mom & grandma & aunty had all died from it.
Then in November I had to drive into town to pick up my son, he was in the counseling office and missed the bus. He had written a letter and read it out to class, it was hinting at he is tempted to attempt suicide. After questioning him a few days later I found out he was being bullied by a former friend. I met with the counselor in late November, and we went over his letter and I told her about the bully and the friendship they had shared. We head in on Tuesday to meet with the Psychologist for a assessment.
Then the day I picked up my son I got a message from my parents saying my sister was hospitalized, we thought she had a reaction to Chemo, but it was an infection. A week and a half later I was taking my son for Fasting Glucose test, then off to the hospital to visit my sister, I didn't go earlier because I work in a school and most of our students were sick, so I didn't want to carry any cold germs in to her. She has been under the knife 5 times so far, first a double mastectomy, then to remove diseased tissue because Home Care didn't show up to change her bandages, then to put in the thing for her Chemo, then twice to remove both extenders because they both got infected. I also met with the counselor the day I seen my sister, we talked for an hour about my son.
Then a couple weeks ago I noticed something wrong with my middle child, turns out she shaved between her eyebrows because her "friends" were bugging her about having a uni-brow. Which she doesn't have a true uni-brow, but around here mothers are shaving their kid's legs at 6 yrs old, and they wear g-stings as soon as they are potty trained.
I was so mad the other week because of all this bullying going on with my kids, my youngest was teased about having body hair back in Feb. I was tempted to quit my job and start telling my kids they can punch anyone that bullies or teases them. I felt like a horrible mom, that I have taught my children to be so nice that they are being targeted by so called friends. I even told them that as a mom I want to say hit them, but as a school worker I can't. My son even agreed with me that I am too nice to other kids and harder on them.
But I have to start taking care of me, I know if I exercise that my level of stress will come down. That I would think clearer if I do exercise. I am at the point of not being able to hold back my tears anymore, and when I do cry I can't stop for an hour or more. The worst part of it is I am past the point of being consoled and that I cry in front of my children, and that makes them feel bad. The last time I broke down, my son was apologizing to me for making me feel bad. I had to explain to him it wasn't his fault, he has nothing to feel bad about.
As of today I have started on my elliptical. I will get on my elliptical for 30 minutes a day, for atleast 2 weeks, after that I will add in other exercises. I am not going to go all out to start with because I know those excuses come too easily. Oh and I spent all day cleaning my kitchen. I was up about 9 this morning, after breakfast, we finished taking down the Christmas decoration, cleaned the floors and then I decided to put kitchen stuff into the crawlspace, stuff I don't use, which turned into a cleaning frenzy. I got the closets and all the cabinets below the counter cleaned. Took me until 5:30, with about 1/2 hour for lunch, the family had to fend for themselves, as I was too busy cleaning.

Alisa Lee, losing 60 pounds in a year is wonderful!! Taking vegetable soup to work for lunch is not only a good way to lose weight but to save money too!!
tasb, I will continue praying for your sister. I'm sorry that your children are being bullied and teased. Is the school aware of what is going on and which students are involved? I hope that exercising does help you deal with stress better.
Yesterday was my last exercise day for the week. I usually exercise Saturday through Tuesday, Today, hopefully, I will finish typing all my answers to about 6 pages of paperwork my new lung doctor sent me. After I get it all typed up, my husband, Tom, will write the answers on the papers. My handwriting is not reliable anymore. Often neither of us can read it. I have finished about 4 pages. I am so thankful to have a husband who does help.

Alisia, welcome and what a great role model you are. I like the idea of vegies 4X/week. I could do that and even DH wouldn't mind if he could have his meat the rest of the week, it also souns healthy. I'm thinking of giving it a try. Also, passing on white things - sounds good, but the trouble with that is I truly love baking breads, specially sourdough. Guess I'll have to check out some whole wheat recipes.
I've started back today watching what we are eating and need to weight myself - I try to do that 3X/week at least but have been pretty scared about facing that scale after the holidays. DH admitted to a 5# weight gain and I usually gain more than him so it's scary. But will put my big girl panties on and do it once I'm finished here and then let everyone know.
tasb - you've had your hands full for awhile now and while eating healthy and moving is important - the most important is you give yourself the space to realize that sometimes we ALL need to back off, take a deep breath, and realize we do the very best we can and are intitled to take a break from food plans, excercise and deal with the issues that life throws at us. You've got plenty on you plate as it is. The good thing is, you KNOW how and what to do and also know you can get back to it when the time is right. Right now the important things are YOU, your sister and your family. You are a great example to all of them, being there and supporting all these issues that come up. Hang in there Sweetie and remember we are all here for you and know you'll turn this all around and everyone will be better off for having you in their lives.
Laury, you are doing great following docs orders, keep it up and with Tom to help you'll just keep improving.

Good Morning Ladies!
I am not real sure where to begin with my goals since there are so many, When I do think of everything at once I get overwhelmed and then dont do anything.
Have thought about joining Weight Watcher's online but maybe taking baby steps for a bit would be better. I do want to drink more water because sometimes I only get a few bottles in a week. 2 or 3 bottles a day would be good for me to begin with and then increase the amounts. I do have a pitcher that I can put fruit in a tube and it flavors the water.
Exercise is hard for me as I dont stand steadily for very long and the pain I have makes any movement hurt badly. Have Googled exercises that can be done while sitting and I could definitely give those a try.
I enjoy playing the recipe tag games here and dont always watch the calorie, fat or carb contents so that is one place I can get healthier. Rarely eating breakfast is another area I need to work harder on.
Laury good for you for sticking to your exercise routine! I know Tom tries very hard to make meals and snacks for you that are healthy so you will meet your weight goal in no time.
Jacqueline congratulations on the weight loss! My sister's DBIL had gastric bypass surgery and he lost quite a bit too. Said he never felt better and was so happy he decided to do it. Hoping you have as painless as possible recovery from your shoulder surgery.
Bonnie maybe you could give the seated exercises a try also. You wouldnt have to be on your foot walking down to the pool or trying to get in and out of it with your back pain. The holidays are just about impossible to get thru without gaining. To many yummy goodies to look at and then end up in our mouth for "just a little bite".
Deb I like the way you say healthy eating and not dieting. When I think of going on a diet I know there will be a lot of foods I will not be able to have and then I want them that much more. I end up slipping and eating something bad after a couple days. So sorry to hear about your dog. HUGS!!!
AlisaLea vegetable soup is one of my favorites! Throw a little of this and that in there and call it soup. Congrats on your 60 pound weight loss and we will all be supporting you on those last 50! Wish I could do Zumba it looks like so much fun and like that's its a quicker paced exercise program.
tasb I am so sorry you have all those major issues going on at one time. HUGS!! You are right though, you need to take care of you first. Your sister will need a helping hand when she gets out of the hospital and your kids need you for their advocate against the bullies right now. It is awful when life bites us in the rear end like it has done you but know we are in your corner and here anytime.

Ugh!!!! Well, with the support of this group I finally got on the scale and am up to 161.5#, the most I've weighed in some time. So know that I've faced up to it - time to take it OFF - starting out with baby steps - make sure I eat at least 3 meals a day, snack on healthy veggies as needed and increase cooking w/veggies and brown rice and breads. Add in some short walks and more movement - and Laurlie's comment about increasing water struck home too. With these little changes will see what next Monday brings and then maybe at some other changes while carrying these forward.
