So cool that this sort of thing can be done. I can't help but wonder about the gazillion dollars it must cost.

I think it's worth whatever the cost because they have been able to not only help companion animals, but apply the technology to help humans. I suspect it costs less to develop things this way, because the procedure to test things like this on humans is way more costly, complicated and time consuming than trying new technologies on animals. Plus, the prototypes are probably less expensive to produce because they are smaller than those needed by people. So humans can benefit faster than if they first tried these on people. I remember the stories about the prosthetic tail for the dolphin. The fact that they were able to use some of those discoveries to help someone in that dire situation seems awesome to me.
