    May Challenge Inside Out

This May we are challenging you to go inside out. We all know the importance of lighting, staging and so on, but have you ever thought about comparing and embracing the differences between a photograph taken inside compared to those taken outside?

Let’s embrace the difficulties of both the inside and outside conditions, remembering there are pros and cons of both.

Now don’t say well I can’t do this because it is raining or overcast as that is part of this challenge instead lets embrace it and use what we have to help set your mood.

Say for example you want to do cocoa you would do the inside photo the way you normally do and then carry your cocoa outside using the dark sky lit up by a candle or outdoor fire place to set a mood with shadows that have been cast by your lighting source.

The below photos for example were both taken at 5:30 a.m.

The biggest difference of course is the overall feel of each photo. But some of the other things that made me think this might be a good experiment and learning experience for all of us was no matter which setting or angle I tried the shot taken on the dark rainy porch is not as sharp and crisp as the one taken in the house. Another interesting difference is the color of the bread and cream cheese on the indoor shot is spot on and the berries and green plate are just a little off but the berries and green plate is spot on in the outdoor photo and the bread and cream cheese are slightly off in the outdoor shot.

    Inside shot

and Outside shot **taken on a dark rainy morning with only a porch light**

Please show us your indoor and outdoor photos so we can learn what does and doesn’t work.

All are welcome to join in on the conversation as we play with inside out photos.

sounds an interesting idea... but as you mentioned, the weather is terrible... we had frost on the car yesterday morning which was cleared by it raining all day !... will see what I can do.... my only thought is I will be setting up as normal inside with lighting and such...so it might not be too representive of the struggles of indoor shots ?....

    A well set challenge, Deb!!

I'm not home yet and we're eating out a lot, so I'll have to wait a week or more before I get something set up at home!

Steve, I see your point. Maybe you could try indoor shots without fill-in lights (as most of us do) and then try outdoor shots with the available light only.

Snow!! It's rather late for snow in your parts, isn't it? How about a "food-in-the-snow shot" ?

Steve frost, rain, no light that is all part of the challenge. As for the inside shots like Zurie said you try overhead light, a table light and so on.

In my outdoor example above I was on the porch it was raining and the sun was not up yet, all I had going for me was the porch light which is not moveable or very good but did make for an interesting photo.

Thanks, Zurie, for the invite! I'd love to do this. As you all know I am in the learning process, so I'm in!

The two pics I posted today in the photos forum, the veggie pie was taken outside, the pork chop one inside.

wave.gif Diane so glad to have you on board.

Don't worry about the weather as bad weather is part of the challenge.

The photo used above was taken in the dark and rain both icon_wink.gif

Wow what a difference on the pizza!

The inside looks normal but the outside shot looks and feels like it came from an old magazine.

Hay this thread is all about practice and learning what does and does not work no matter the conditions icon_wink.gif

Your breakfast brings some interesting differences as well, with the inside shot having a florescent dinner feel and the outside shot having a much more natural fell.

Here is my inside shot of Alli's Fried Herbed Almonds

Fried Herbed Almonds (inside) photo DSC04476-1_zpsd173f9aa.jpg

Outside shot using same setting as above

Fried Herbed Almonds (outside food setting) photo DSC04486-1_zps9f01e4e6.jpg

And last but not least outside using Intelligent auto setting (again outside)

Fried Herbed Almonds (outside auto setting) photo DSC04490-1_zps7db8c662.jpg

What got me on the last shot is the camera kept saying backlight even though I was facing the sun (sun was just starting to set)

The biggest different I see in the recipes is how the color of the almonds changes just slightly in each shot.
