    what is the canola oil used for the recipe says 1/2 to taste I don't see it used in the directions.

    You cut the number of number of servings in half, I bet. When you do that and an ingredient doesn't have a set amount, it defaults to 1/2 to taste. It only changes the amounts in the list, not in the directions. The canola oil is used for frying the doughnuts, see step 11.
