Hi... do you do anything with the zest from the lemon? Also, do you cut the squeezed lemon into slices before adding them to the pan? Thanks, Jan

It's not well written, but in step 2, you are putting the zest and juice in a bowl, then adding other things to them in step 3. You are only using the juiced-out shells for whatever flavor they may add; slicing them will only extract bitterness from the pith.

Yes. You discard them after cooking. They will serve as aromatics and release some oils and juices into the pan as they cook.
