    African Violet question

    Mon Jan 28, 2013 9:43 pm Groupie
My daughter has a tiny little african violet. Well, it's in a tiny little (1inch) pot. It isn't growing in diameter it is growing up/getting taller. It is not blooming and hasn't bloomed in a while. Do I need to repot it? What can I do to get it to bloom again? I have never been good with african violets. I think I over water them. I have one as well, in a bigger pot and it's not blooming either but it isn't getting taller. Anybody any good with them and can give some advice?

It is a pretty small plant in a 1 inch pot - too small unless it's just a real baby or a miniature. Growing tall is usually a sign of too low light. AVs don't do well in direct light, but an eastern window usually is safe.

It's in an Eastern window. It might be a mini. I wasn't with her when she bought and there's no tag with it. What size pot should I put it in? I looked online for info and everything said that you measure the diameter of the leaf spread and put it in a pot 1/3 of that size. That's what it's in right now. She'll have had it a year around Easter time. She wants me to bring it up to her at college this weekend so if I'm re potting it, I need to get it done soon. Is the African Violet soil the stores sell any good? I read differing opinions on it online. Some people say it's fine, some people say it's the worst possible thing for them. I just don't want to kill her plant. icon_sad.gif
