I don't know how much I can write. I'm still pretty emotional.
I came home Friday night to find her seriously injured. Her haunch area was torn and she was almost unreponsive. Called the vet. He met me there. We thought at first it was just a bad wound. He asked if we had any junk piles with sheet metal. No. She was in shock. He put the "bear hugger" on her, which is like a giant hair dryer, to warm her up and started an iv. When her temp came up enough he said he would do the surgery and let me know.
He called about an hour later and said he found more wounds on the opposite side and also a bulge where she had a hernia. When he opened her up to do the surgery he found that she was badly injured inside. She had a kidney that was almost completely torn loose, air in chest cavity, nerve damage to her injured side, her intestines were through her stomach wall, and some other internal wounds. I was so upset it didn't all register with me.
He said she had a 30% chance of survival. She was still on the table. He said she would be facing multiple surgies and not be the same. He said he really felt she would succumb to the injuries.
I asked if it could have been a car, although they never go near the road because my house is 8 acres from the road. No, he said, it was surely an attack by a larger animal. He said she had been violently shaken and he didn't know how she was still living when I got home. I told him she was hanging on to say goodbye. I made the awful decision to not go further. I couldn't do that to her.
On Sunday one of my neighbors came by and said she'd lost three goats this week. Two had similiar injuries as Candy and one was drowned in her pond.
We suspect coyotes. The vet said to watch the children and the other dogs while they are out in the yard. I saw a coyote on the dirt road that is near my house the other night. I should have run him over.
Candy was our three legged poodle. A sweeter dog was never born. We called her "foot dog" because she was always under my feet or if I was sitting and eating she was laying on my feet. My feet feel cold right now.
I'm at work. Gotta go before I can't stop crying.

Jneen you did the right thing in not putting her through any more. She's playing with my Maggie right now and if she likes cats, Casey will play with her and Sam will clean her face.
When you feel more up to it, would you tell us about Candy. Others probably know, but I don't remember - where and when did you get her and tell us all about her.

Oh jneen I am so very sorry! You know that you made the right call but it doesn't ease the pain. What a brave and loyal little dog to hang in until you got home. Sending prayers and healing thoughts to you and Howard.
