HI all - as many of you may know Saralaya is in NYC and is preparing for Sandy. She may lose power and not be able to get here. She will check in as soon as she is able I'm sure.

Anyone else in the path... please check in as you are able.

Here we are preparing for a nasty night - 60 mph winds and a TON of rain. Sandy will likely have weakened but is being met by a storm coming in from the northwest. My region is under an alert but at least we are a bit south of where snow is expected. I expect our basement will flood - it is unfinshed so not a huge big deal.
Our hydro crews are all out checking poles and trees near lines to reduce the possibility of power failure. Compare to many in the US our grid is much newer and more stable. It is unlikely we will be without power for too long.

We're supposed to get high winds, and some rain, but nothing like what's going on in the States. Please check in to make sure you're all okay.

Hi all..... actually I'm just outside NYC proper...in lower Westchester County NY... at the far western end of Long Island Sound.... parts of this area is supposed to flood BIG TIME from a 9 - 11 FOOT storm surge tonight... We live in a bldg that is on a hill and built on a rise so the flooding shouldn't get to us especially on the second floor. But the bldg basement will no doubt flood and we are anticipating losing power. We're in the old and less stable grid!! K9- I hope you all get off relatively unscathed, This storm is being compared to the record breaking storm of 1838 sometimes referred to as the "Long Island Express", among other names....

I heard the power is out in lower Manhattan - I've got some colleagues who took the train in this morning, and now they're stuck until . . . ???

Here in upstate, it's been raining the better part of the day and now it's VERY windy. Not fit for man nor beast. They've already cancelled most of the schools for tomorrow.

Try to stay safe and dry. I wouldn't like living in hurricane territory. In Texas we have tornadoes but at least the storm has passed within an hour and we don't have to live on pins and needles for days.

Karen, saralaya is ok. She is without heat and power but is able to go to the local synagogue to use their wifi. Just so you don't worry.

Thanks everyone for your good thoughts and prayers. The updated situation is....unchanged. We still have no power, heat or hot water at home. Our synagogue is one of many places that is offering use of the bldg (for heat and coffee, tea, etc) charging phones and use of WiFi. Someone invited me to come over and take a hot shower today and I am GOING! Also the NY Sports Club location here is offering the same as is the local Jewish Community Center. The libraries have had their power restored and are open late so people can be warm, charge their things and use the WiFi.

What a 21st century group of refugees we are!

No word yet on power restoration aside from "Customers in your area SHOULD have power back by November 9th" Then there is the phone service (messed up lines) and cable..but those are mild compared to no heat, light etc,

Guess I would not have been such a terrific pioneer!

Saralaya, I just read your post in the greetings swap thread. it's good to hear from you, and it's good to hear that you are doing well, and that you have places to go to keep warm and get showered.

How are the cats doing? I know it's going to sound strange, but I hope there are places that allow your cats to stay and get warm too. I don't know, I guess I get worried about pets, because they rely so much on humans to help them.

It must be so frustrating not having electricity for days. I was without power for 8 hours once after a tornado storm and I thought I was going to go insane.

Have any of you watched the new TV show Revolution? The plot of the series is the entire planet Earth loses electricity for unknown reasons and the chaos that ensues. We really take for granted our electric powered lives and how dependent we are of electricity.

Potscrubber, we've been very much enjoying that show - my husband commented that the girl (daughter/sister/niece) is very Katniss-esque (The Hunger Games), which I've got to agree with.

Fortunately, though, we don't have militias keeping everyone in line. Yet.
