I am with Steve some of the free stuff will do a lot once you get to messing with it.
I found that given enough patience I can make photobucket do almost everything PSE can and a few thing my PSE will not do

Dcarch the colored and the black and white are both great. How did you make the little red and white strips?
Now did you put the two light spots on the black and white photo or was that auto done by the editing program?

Archie, you're our dark horse!! You do the most beautiful plates of food! Who do you cook for? Surely not just yourself??
LOVE that 1st plate; I'm a sucker for fine dining .... not that I get to do it often, as it comes with a hefty price tag!
I also love the square white plates. I know where I can get such plates, but ye gods, I have stacks of plates and what do I do with them all??
Love what you did here. And yes, Deb, I notice the 2 round light spots. Could just be some reflection. Clever black-and-white shot, this 2nd one.

At the back of the October 2012 National Geographic magazine is a short photo article titled "Once Upon a Home" -- photos taken in abandoned cottages in Finland, by Kai Fagerstrom. This photographer does not even have flash, so he adjusts his camera for daylight.
But it is amazing how his (apparently untouched) photos of the small animals which appear in the empty, dusty rooms seem to have a little colour on one side, and the rest of the photo seems black and white.
It could just have been the bad light, but gee, it's so full of atmosphere. In one photo hang thin red curtains where some light falls in, and to the right, where badgers run on the floor, it looks almost like black and white only -- merest suggestion of colour over the ancient fireplace.
If you have this issue, or can find it in a library, have a look. It really fits in with this thread.

Yes Zurie some wonderful photos and the one of the owl really fits this thyme, but it is the dog and the old house that I really liked.
If anyone else would like to check them out here let me know and I will send you the link to National Geographic’s Wild Squatters Once Upon a Home.

Thanks Debbwl and Zurie. I am happy that you like what I do and cook.
I admire people and chefs who have such skills in food preparation and presentation. What I do and cook, you may notice, actually require not much sophistication (no elaborate recipes), money (no truffles) or time (no complicated preparations).
I just want to share with you that there are short cuts to many things to achieve interesting results. The point is keep doing it. Yes, I do cook like this for every meal, including reusing leftovers.
Shortcuts, the graduated gray scale as you all have found out, is in most software, the light spot effect is in many software also, just search “Lens Flare”. There, no skills needed.
I didn’t do anything to make those little red and white strips, those are red skin radishes cut sideways.

Archie, really enjoy the ideas you bring and inspire as I grew up with a mother that did not like cooking and most the time I am so busy that it is not till we are eating that I say oh shoot I should have or could have.
What you call no special skill is a fresh new perspective to food that inspires me, so please know that I really do enjoy your posting as both art and inspiration.
Never would have guessed those were radishes

Archie, however much you protest ... ! You make a gorgeous plate of food, and whether it's fresh or leftovers, most of us cannot do that!
You probably have many other interests, but we'd appreciate it if you'd drop in now and then into this forum. NOT just this thread -- I mean, do post in this Food Photo Forum.
We are mostly bumbling along, and I, for one, love your carefully designed plates. (Okay, you might use potato peelings and green bean tops and still create an artistic plate, and you do it so beautifully! )
You see, most of us either cook for our family, or in some cases people cook for themselves. So, it's a question of, and I quote someone else: "Stop garnishing and get the bl**dy food on the table!" Soooo ... end of trying to enchant then with fine-dining plates! I cook for husband and myself -- and through my association with Food.com and doing food photos my husband has become ... hmmm ... rather spoiled! Let me add that he he cannot cook an egg.
So, we won't let you go!!

Had little time for the PC in general -- so much happening here.
Deb, the one thing I can NOT do is to really fade from color to black and white ...
Playing, I came up with these 3:
1. This is some kind of "swirl" -- totally unsuited to food! Just interesting! It's a salad with cucumber slices, tomatoes, and sliced boiled eggs.
2. This was called, I think, "radial blur". I think it could work on a food photo with a perfect centre subject (I could not find such a thing in my folders! )
3. And this we've done before, so nothing new here.
