What do I do with Portuguese Sweet Muffins?

Is there a traditional way of eating them, or an accompaniment? My instinct is to toast them and butter them like English muffins. Maybe some fried egg for a breakfast sandwich? I read some blogger that made his own and poured maple syrup on them.

They all sound a great way of serving them Ice Cool Kitty - but maybe one of our Portuguese members can tell us a more authentic and new way of serving them! I am sure they will be by soon!

So, this morning I made an egg sandwich on one for breakfast and took it to work. I took one bite, but it was cold, so I decided to heat it in the microwave. Then somehow I dumped the whole thing on the floor after heating! I scooped everything up, but couldn't bring myself to eat it anyway. So, I didn't really get a taste, but it was not that sweet, but sweeter than an English muffin (I think). I'll try again tomorrow.

I bought these in the grocery store of all places. I was intrigued, so I bought them. I thought my world traveling husband would know what they were, but I was wrong.

I am of Portuguese decent. I have eaten these all my life and my grandmother would always make them fresh for me.

I was actually thinking of making them this weekend, I don't have my grandmothers recipe 8(, but I have searched the net for a recipe. If it works out I will post it.

I would just eat them as is with a cup of tea. Occasionally I would toast and butter them. I would also spread Portuguese rice pudding on it. You can spread jam or marmalade. My mother would eat it them with a San George Portuguese cheese.

I have never seen anyone put maple syrup on them and eat them like pancakes. If that is how you like it, then eat them that way.

I hope this helps, maybe someone can give me some other ways to eat them.

I am not Portuguese, just happened to have the good fortune to come across 'Portuguese Pancakes' at a market in Mystic, CT about 25 years ago. They looked like English muffins to me, so I ate them toasted and buttered. I was hooked. Then one day I made a ham, egg and cheese sandwich using a Portuguese pancake. It was the best ham, egg and cheese sandwich I had ever eaten.

My internet research tonight tells me that in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, places with large Portuguese populations, Portuguese pancakes or muffins are quite common in delis and eateries, many places serve their sandwiches on these. I will be looking for them whenever I go that far north again. Can't get 'em here in Maryland. But I found a recipe tonight, so I think I'll be having them in a few hours. Yay!!!

I have been a big fan of Bolos Levedos for years! I absolutely love them. Let me tell you how they taste best. Slice each muffin in half as you would an english muffin; butter each half, and grill them in a frying pan on low heat -cut side down-for a few minutes, with a weight on them--like a heavy plate, or cover--until golden brown. Then flip them over to toast them on the other side--for a few minutes, without weights. Transfer to a plate, smear with a little orange marmalade, and serve with tea or coffee. Great as a snack, or as a quick breakfast. The lemony vanilla flavor of the muffin with the tangy citrus of the marmalade and the toasty butterness of the light grilling makes this an addictive Sunday morning treat. LOVE THEM !!
