Petunia square:
Square measures 12” when worked in worsted-weight yarn with a size H hook. Size adjustments can be made by using different yarn/hook, or by adding or omitting rounds.
Abbreviations
These patterns are written in US crochet terms.
MR – magic ring. Wrap yarn round fingers twice clockwise, insert hook through ring and make a slipstitch to start. When first round is completed, pull yarn tail to close the ring.
Ch – chain stitch
slst – slipstitch. Insert hook through stitch, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook.
Sc – single crochet. Insert hook through stitch, yarn overand pull through stitch, yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.
Dc – double crochet. Yarn over, insert hook through stitch. Yarn over, pull through stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over again, pull through 2 loops on hook.
Hdc – half-double crochet. Yarn over, insert hook through stitch, yarn over and pull up loop through stitch. Yarn over, pull through 3 loops on hook.
Trc – treble crochet. Yarn over twice, insert hook through stitch, yarn over, pull loop through stitch. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over again, pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over a third time, pull through last 2 loops on hook.
TrCl – treble crochet cluster.. *Yarn over, insert hook through stitch. Yarn over, pull through stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through next 2 loops on hook (2 loops remain on hook. Repeat from * twice more in same stitch (5 loops remain on hook). Yarn over, pull through all five remaining loops.
Tr3tog – work 3 trebles together. *Yarn over, insert hook through next stitch. Yarn over, pull through stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through next 2 loops on hook (2 loops remain on hook. Repeat from * twice more, working each trc into next stitch (5 loops remain on hook). Yarn over, pull through all five remaining loops.

A=white
B=lilac
C=light sage green
D=oatmeal
E=coffee
Round 1: Colour A – Make MR, sc 12 in ring. Join with slst and fasten off (12 sc)
Round 2: Join colour B with slst in any sc. ch3 as first dc, dc in same st. dc2 in each stitch. Slst into 3rd chain to join (24 dc)
Round 3: (ch4, tr3tog, ch4, sc in next st) six times. Join round with slst and fasten off colour B. (6 ‘petals’ and 6 sc)
Round 4: Join colour A with slst in point of petal.(ch4, trcl into front post of round 1 sc below, c4, sc into point of petal) 6 times, join with slst and fasten off colour A.
Round 5: Join colour C in sc at point of petal. *ch 3, make a dccl, working through both back loop of trcl below, and sc between petals from round 3, together. Ch3, sc in next sc. Repeat from * 6 times, join and fasten off colour C. (6 clusters, 12 ch3 loops)
Round 6: Join colour D in any ch3 loop. C1, sc4 in same loop. Sc5 in each ch3 loop around. Join with slst. (60 sc)
Round 7: Ch4 as first tr, (tr, c3, 2tr) in same st. *(tr, 3dc, 2hdc, 2sc, 2hdc, 3dc, tr) over next 14 sts. Corner (2tr, c3, 2tr) in next st, repeat from * 2 more times. Tr, 3dc, 2hdc, 2sc, 3dc, tr over next 14 sts, join and fasten off colour D. (72 sts, 4 ch3 spaces)
Round 8: Join colour E in any c3 space. (Ch3, 2dc, c2, 3dc) in c3 space. Dc in each dc to next ch3 space. *Corner (3dc, ch2, 3dc), dc in each dc to next ch3 space. Repeat from * twice more. Join with slst. (98 dc, 4 ch2 spaces)
Round 9: ch3. *Corner (3dc, c2, 3dc) in ch2 space. (Skip next 3 dc, dc3 between 3rd and 4th dc) 7 times. Repeat from * 3 times more, finishing final shell by dc2 and join with slipstitch to 1st ch3. Fasten off colour E. (36 3dc shells)
Rounds 10, 11: Join colour B and work both rounds as round 9.Fasten off colour B
Round 12: Join colour C and sc in every dc, corner as sc3 in c2 sp. Join and fasten off colour C.
Weave in loose ends, block if desired.
