What is it? A friend just returned from Montreal and had this sandwich and keeps raving about it. She was told that it is not available in the states. What kind of meat is it and how is the sandwich prepared? TIA

Montreal smoked meat is a smoked brisket similar to pastrami but with different spices. The sandwiches usually consist of a huge (and I mean really huge) mound of warm sliced meat on rye bread with mustard.
I'm not a fan of the smoked meat myself but I can see the appeal for those who are.

Below is a pic of a place famous for smoked meat sandwiches. The meat is usually steamed warm and served on warm rye bread with mustard

No one make smoked meat better than Montreal. Like everything when you grow up on it..... pastrami and corned beef is good but its not smoked meat. I gave up ordering it anywhere else. . When you come to Montreal have one, best places are the Main Smoke Meat right across from The Main Delicatessen(Schwartz)
on St Laurent street near duluth.
