    ZWT8-Virtually Travelling the World!~Main Thread

This Challenge showcases the Kitchen Gadgets & Appliances Forum

    Start Date: July 20

End Date: July 31 deadline midnight Zaar Time

    Player Limit: 3 per team
Points: 5 (per person for a possible 15)
    Challenge Type: Individual Non-Cooking

For hundreds of years, great French cooks have produced exceptional results with a fairly limited collection of equipment. They have relied on whisks for beating, spatulas for folding, spoons for stirring, heavy copper pots for excellent distribution of heat, and rolling pins to shape dough. The chef's and paring knives are essential in the French kitchen. And because bread is a frequent addition to many meals, a serrated bread knife is also common.

The term "la batterie de cuisine" is French for a range of kitchen tools needed to create complete meal courses. This includes basic cooking items like bowls, knives, cutting boards, appliances, as well as specialized tools like baking pans, mandolines, and pastry utensils. There are, of course, many specialty kitchen tools that have also become commonplace for cooking French cuisine. To name only a few:

    • A mandoline is used to precisely cut vegetables in perfect, uniform shapes, including slices, julienne cuts, or waffle cuts.

    • A Chinoise is a conical strainer used for making perfectly smooth soups and sauces.

    • A lame is a small tool with a razor-sharp blade at one end, used for slashing cuts into risen bread dough just before it goes into the oven.

    • A rolling croissant cutter speeds up the process of cutting the dough to the right shape.

    • A mezzaluna is a knife consisting of a single or double curved blade with a handle on each end. It is often used for chopping herbs or very large single blade versions are sometimes used for pizza or pesto.

    • And other equipment has evolved for specialized purposes: molds for mousses, flans, terrines, and pates, plates and tongs for serving escargot, slicers for truffles, peelers for chestnuts, etc. The list is too long to list here.

As in most aspects of their lives, the French love quality over quantity. A French woman would rather choose one perfect silver charm bracelet over a whole armful of cheap plastic ones. She would also choose durable kitchen utensils the same way.

    1. A Kitchenaid professional mixer. I think this could make alot of tasks so much easier. I only have an old hand mixer in the kitchen now. This costs $450
    http://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-KP26M1XNP-Professional-Series-6-Quart/dp/B0002Y5X9W/ref=cm_srch_res_rpli_1

    2. A quality cast iron dutch oven. You can cook practically anything in a good, heavy dutch oven. Considering how often we lose electricity in Columbus, Ohio, I should probably have outdoor cooking equipment and start gathering wood. No, I'm not kidding. $50

La Batterie de Cuisine Challenge By Annacia, Chefs gone WILD!

The most amazing thing happened. This morning a courier delivered a 500.00 gift certificate from an anonymous friend!! Who does this kind of thing? Not being one to look a gift horse in the mouth I immediately went shopping. Oh my gosh, the entire world in available on line but I decided to concentrate on my kitchen because thats where I live!

I've always wanted a pot rack. Whats not to love about having your best loved and most used items just hanging there waiting for you to grab them at a moments inspiration! After browsing around I settled on a wonderful wall mount rack that will hold many things from pots and pans to towels and even favorite spice and herb jars on the top (along with my well loved chocolate goodies cookbook icon_biggrin.gif)

Hi-Lite Leaf Black Leather Wall Mounted Pot Rack. Price $340.00

Well, that took a big bite out of my gift certificate! Thats ok, with the bigger ticket item taken care of I can play now. Mmmmm, what goodies can I find?
Oooooo, I know, a French Press Pot. Always wanted to try one of these icon_biggrin.gif
Bodum Chambord French Press Coffee Maker. Price $40.00

I deeply love chocolate and for me it's a special treat that I indulge in seldom although I do make things for DH and family and look what I found!! I can play with this very happily and maybe even end up with some pro looking creations.

    Chocolate Dipping Forks. Price $20.00

And because sometimes I just don't want to drag out the food pro and all of it's kit I'd really enjoy one of these.
Calphalon Gadgets Precision Mandoline Slicer. Price $95.00

RATS! I only have $5.00 left *sigh*. Thats enough to head to the coffee shop thats only 2 blocks away (NOT Starbucks) and enjoy a mocha delight coffee while I tell everyone there about my good fortune and send silent thank yous to my unknown benefactor as I look forward to putting my wonderful new (and long awaited) items of kitchen happiness to use.
    Thank you, whoever you are.
