    - twissis here for the Chefs Gone Wild to tell you yet another amazing story of our adventures together (misadventures if the whole truth was known). ZWT-8 had just ended & the CGW felt we'd been everywhere & done everything, but we were so wrong. We were gobsmacked (love that word) to learn from Nif that the CGW had won Food.com's version of the lottery - A week-long Tour of Great Britain & Ireland w/a Celebrity Chef of our choice & $pending money to go w/it! icon_eek.gif We're talkin MAJOR icon_eek.gif

    - I wasted no time & quickly appointed myself (I do that a lot & Nif just lives w/it) in charge of a plan. The 1st order of business was to select a celebrity chef for our adventure & that was a no-brainer for me. You see, I believe in signs - not real signs, but ones that start w/a gut feeling. When I've been asked what I missed most about the U.S. now that I live in Iceland, my answer was always the same - English-speaking TV shows. That was true til 2 yrs ago when I happily discovered on-line TV sites. The 1st TV show to get me "well & truly hooked" was Masterchef Australia. I watch every episode & a fairly recent one featured British Chef Heston Blumenthal as a guest chef who'd be challenged by 1 of the Masterchef wannabes in a 3-course cooking contest. I admit I don't recall if he won the contest or not icon_redface.gif , But I do remember how cute he was on-screen icon_wink.gif .. How friendly, appealing, down-to-earth & helpful he was w/the Masterchef contestants .. & .. How much he seemed to love what he does. He interested me, so I did some research.

    - Blumenthal is the chef-patron of The Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire, England - a 3 Michelin-starred restaurant known for its whimsical, scientific & creative style of cookery & famed for being named the World's Best Restaurant (more than once). At the age of 16, Heston travelled to France w/his family for the 1st time & became fascinated w/the world of food. He spent the next decade learning the basics of French cuisine from books & working as everything from a photocopier salesman to a debt collector to fund annual research trips to France. He opened The Fat Duck in 1995 w/no financial backing. On the 2nd dy of opening the oven exploded & he spent the rest of service w/a bag of frozen peas on his head. The restaurant gradually moved from serving simple French bistro food to the innovative, rule-breaking, multi-sensory tasting menu it serves today. Perhaps what is most extraordinary about the success of The Fat Duck is that Heston is entirely self-taught, save for 3 wks spent in professional kitchens.

His restaurant is well-known for its menu of unusual dishes. Some examples include:

"Snail Porridge" (Fennel, minced snail flesh & ham served on a porridge cooked in snail stock w/garlic & parsley)

"'Scrambled Egg & Bacon Ice Cream"

"Poached Salmon" (Poached in liquorice gel served w/an artichoke vanilla mayonnaise)

Equally unique is that The Fat Duck menu is a tasting menu that asks the diner(s) to "Please allow 3 1/2 hours for this menu." His "tasting menu" is described as "a sequence of dishes designed not only to capture a delicious & exciting range of flavours, textures & aromas, but also to bring multisensory appeal, some culinary history & a sense of theatre to the dining experience." ... Pls forgive me, but this man so fascinates me that I could go on & on about him for longer than I should (I prob already have).

The moment I mentioned his name as my choice, Annacia jumped up & said "I know about that guy icon_exclaim.gif I'd love to plan the itinerary for our wk w/him. Can I pls" icon_question.gif I've never been able to say "No" to Annacia & wouldn't anyway, so that was decided. Nif saw all this unfold, got a bit concerned because Annacia & I have been known to create a wee bit of trouble when left to our own devices (frankly our rep is undeserved). icon_wink.gif Nif decided, however, to have a "voice of reason" join our planning grp & Melanie D completed our trio.

Now the real fun began at warp-speed. icon_smile.gif - I don't know if Heston expected to be showing us around, but he accepted the obvious when Annacia was quick to reveal her "schedule of events" for our wk in the UK & Emerald Isle w/him. We had 7 dys & nites to fill, so Annacia planned at least 1 spec event to share for ea dy (or nite). ~ Our 1st Nite Kick-Off Party ~ Annacia had just been involved in the ZWT-8 Pub Crawl Challenge, so to celebrate our arrival in the UK - Never mind, I'm sure you can guess the rest. We're not allowed to share pics of this nite - alvinakatz made us promise no one would ever set eyes on them. icon_eek.gif

~ Day 2 ~ Annacia knew I'd always wanted to step onto the hallowed ground of Wimbledon, so she made it happen for me. Gotta love that girl icon_exclaim.gif Tea Girl loves tennis too. She had a favorite on the court that dy & was pretty vocal about some of the line calls.

~ Day 3 ~ WooHoo icon_exclaim.gif We all went shopping at Harrod's icon_exclaim.gif The French shopping challenge had us worked into a frenzy & we were eager to "part" w/some of our $pending money. You wouldn't believe what a "shopping machine" our loof is. She was a bit preoccupied in Spain (Enough said) & missed out on the French shopping spree, so she was really up for this one. icon_rolleyes.gif

~ Day 4: Our spec nite w/Heston at The Fat Duck, altho we made a dy of it. We went there by rail, the journey from London Paddington to Maidenhead took 40-50 min & then The Fat Duck was a 5-min taxi ride from the station. We used all 3 1/2 hrs of our tasting time & then some icon_exclaim.gif Someone I will not name suggested we may have embarassed ourselves.

~ Day 5 ~ Loads of fun at the Ballymaloe Cookery School in Shanagarry, Cork, Ireland. I'm not sure Heston was at all thrilled over going to a cooking school w/a bunch of ladies from all over the globe, but he got over it when all the other students were so impressed w/our renown chef companion & started gushing over him. icon_rolleyes.gif

.. or .. ~ Day 6 ~ An Annacia Option to taste & tour at either the Harvey's Bristol Cream .. or .. Bailey's Irish Cream distillery. yummy.gif 1 among us managed to do both & we had to make a 2nd promise not to share our pics, didn't we awalde icon_question.gif

~ Day 7 ~ Melanie D (who Nif trusted to be our "voice of reason") managed to give "thinking outside the box" a whole new meaning & earned herself a rep forever all her own. 1st she found Elmotoo on vacation & got her to London because we missed her, we were only 8 without her & Melanie needed 10 bodies for her plan to work. Next she held a private & very brief ceremony to make Zurie an honorary member of the CGW team. It turns out Zurie has shared the only recipe in the data base directly connected to -- You guessed it, Heston Blumenthal icon_exclaim.gif That recipe is Heston Blumenthal's Chips (French Fries), #274729.

Now up to the magic # of 10 bodies, Melanie ...
    ... Dropped Zurie's recipe into a menu
... Found 9 other potato recipes in the All Players Cookbook for Great Britain & Ireland to join it there
... And sent Heston an invitation to a CGW Tasting Party to be held on our last nite in London icon_exclaim.gif

Melanie's icon_idea.gif was that we would "borrow" Heston's kitchen, ea CGW (+ Zurie of course) would make 1 of the recipes on the menu (after a random draw), Heston would taste all of them & then be asked to identify his own recipe. The 1st glitch happened when Zurie drew her own recipe & had to re-draw. I've already told you I believe in signs & this seemed like an omen to me. So who do you think got Zurie's recipe after the re-draw icon_question.gif Moi of course icon_exclaim.gif ...... Like all my stories, "the rest is history". After tasting all the potato dishes, Heston leaned back in his chair & said "This is a trick, isn't it icon_question.gif My recipe clearly isn't in this group." I damn near fainted icon_exclaim.gif I'd made his recipe & he didn't even recognize it. icon_redface.gif I was humiliated. icon_redface.gif I'm never going near another tasting menu as long as I live icon_exclaim.gif That's my story & I'm sticking to it icon_exclaim.gif << Heavy Sigh >>

Chefs Gone Wild Tasting Menu W/Celebrity Chef Heston Blumenthal

We are going to have soooooooooo much fun.

I am assuming that I can pretend that they are both still alive or do I have to stay 'real' for that bit?

You can take whatever creative liberties you would like icon_biggrin.gif

Loving all but af to ask how Fearles ZW8 got into the fFat Duck at such short notice, you usually have to book 3 to 6 months ahead to get a table for 2 lwt alone a crowd - WOW the power of ZWT.

Well, if you mean the Chefs Gone Wild, just think about it. After all, he was "hired" to spend the wk w/us, tour everywhere, etc. We'd all have to eat w/all that activity going on ... even him. Besides, what could be more natural than eating at a celebrity chef's "personal domain" icon_question.gif Then there's always that bottom line ... when you're special (like us), all good things happen in your imagination icon_exclaim.gif icon_razz.gif
