    Small, finger-shaped sponge cake/cookies. They're about the length of a woman's forefinger.

Okra is also sometimes called ladyfingers, but I'm assuming you mean the kind used in desserts. icon_wink.gif

    What are you making?
There are sponge cake type lady fingers (which come filled with a creme filling, and they come unfilled/plain).
There are also Italian lady fingers/Savoiardi, which are the same size and shape as sponge cake type lady fingers, but are much drier (hard) and do not break down (fall apart) when soaked in espresso coffee when making Tiramisu.

When a recipe calls for them, I never know if it is for hard or soft ones, unless of course they specify.

The ones I grew up with were the soft ones.
I think it's safe to say that if it's for a case for a dessert, such as a Charlotte, it would be the soft ones, and if they're soaked, as in a tiramisu, it's the hard ones.

    Me too Choco.
This makes perfect sense. I have only bought soft ones and made tiramisu with them.
It worked the first time and not has well the second time. I figured it had something to do with using soft vs. hard ladyfingers.

    It depends upon the recipe.

Ladyfingers are also a small type of banana. They're a delicacy in Asian cuisine.

Ladyfingers is the common name for okra, a pod vegetable used in Indian and South East Asian as well as African and Creole cooking. icon_wink.gif
