One of my friends keeps raving about a candy that she misses from her home land called Tahtle. (this is the pronunciation, I am not sure of the exact spelling or meaning.) I would love to make this for her, but don't have a recipe nor do I know what exactly it is. I have searched high and low to find out what it is, etc but haven't been able to find any of it. I would even considering purchasing it if I could find a place to buy it. Any advice would be most helpful.
Thank you,
NIcole

Hi Nicole,
I will do my best to find you a recipe but you're going to have to give me a little more info I'm afraid! Can you ask your friend to describe it - the size, shape, whether it's got nuts, has pastry, has fruit etc?
I'll be back soon!
Rezika.

Hi there, my friend said that it is a greyish color. Shaped kind of like a log, or a big tootsie roll. She said that the inside has nuts rolled in it and the outside is covered with powdered sugar. I hope that this helps...

ahh, that's a great help thanks! Now I know better which direction to go lol. Do you think this could be something like your friend is looking for?
I'm still looking at plenty of other things and DH can help when he comes back from work to see if we can get the Arabic spelling of this candy

No problem, I've got that... I'm looking for grey with sugar I just wanted to know if that was the kind of style - these sweets can be lightly dipped in syrup (as shown) or dusted in powdered sugar, depending on the region. I'm still looking for you

Hi Nicole,
I seem to be drawing a blank on this one I'm afraid I've looked in all my books, asked friends, checked the 'net etc & can't find anything that resembles the description or the name....
In Arabic Tahtle means 'to collonise' so that hasn't offered any clues lol. I did find a custard dessert with a similar name but that was closest thing I could find & DH & I searched using English & Arabic
I was wondering if the grey bit could be almond paste which can sometimes look grey. I know a sweet that is finely chopped nuts mixed with other bits & pieces & rolled inside almond paste, dusted with powdered sugar & then cut into lozenge shapes..........does this come anywhere near close?!
I'll keep looking for you though

Hi, I believe your friend is talking about Lakoum-Tutlee (it's a Turkish Delight). Recipe is as follows:
3 Tbsp. gelatin
1/2 cup cold water
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup hot water
Grated rind and juice of 2 lemons
Grated rind and juice of 1 orange
Red or green food coloring
1/2 pound pistachio nuts, chopped
Confectioners sugar
Soften gelatin in cold water. Combine sugar and hot water and heat to boiling. Add gelatin and simmer 20 minutes. Add citrus juices, rind and coloring. Strain into loaf pan. The pan should be large enough so the mixture is 1/2 to 1 inch deep. Add chopped nuts. Chill until firm. When cold, cut into cubes and roll in confectioners sugar. Makes 2 dozen
Hope this is the candy she is referring to.
Good Luck

Hi
As someone has recently posted a similar question on Yahoo Answers, and the only answer she got was a link to this post; I belive that many people will come here to check the answer.
I think that the discription and the name do not match. The discription is close to something like this:
http://slikchocolate.com/page/ar/747/0/Raha-with-Pistachio-(piaster).html
If the picture is showing what your firend is looking for, then it is called "Raha".

I know you said "logs" but because Syrian and Lebanese cuisine are so close could it be this recipe?
